Devo is a New Wave band from the United States that was formed in Akron , Ohio in 1972 . Mark Mothersbaugh is the lead singer . The name is derived from the principle of "de-evolution" - the band claims that humanity is no longer subject to evolution , but rather that it regresses over time.
history
The band was inspired, among other things, by the creationist pamphlet Jocko Homo Heavenbound by B. H. Shadduck (1924), which is processed in the song Jocko Homo and also provided the template for "Devolutionary Oath". The book by Oscar Kiss Maerth mentioned below, which describes the “evolutionary descent” of mankind, was also formative for the band. The refrain “Are we not men? We are Devo! ”Of the song plays on a scene in the film The Island of Dr. Moreau on.
The cover of the American edition of the book The Beginning Was the End by Oscar Kiss Maerth (see literature) was used for the cover of the CD Now It Can Be Told . According to Devo, we are already in a third world war, in which the danger does not come from nuclear weapons, but from human thoughts and actions. The weapons include air passengers who want to save money and use cheap airlines, or tourists visiting amusement parks.
Sometimes the band appeared as their own opening act - in a completely different outfit. It always took a while for the audience to recognize the band.
According to their own statements, the band had split up in 1991, but performed twice at the legendary Lollapalooza Festival in 1996 and 1997. Also in 1996 she brought out a computer game called Adventures of the Smart Patrol with its own soundtrack. In 2001 the band reunited under the name The Wipeouters and released an album. The song Watch Us Work It used in a 2007 DELL advertising campaign was released as a single again under the name Devo.
Devo has been touring almost continuously since 1996, mostly in the US, where the group has a large following. Devo (or The Wipeouters) has rarely played concerts in Europe or Asia (Tokyo); the band has not performed in Germany since 1991. In 2007, after a long period of abstinence, a tour was carried out on European stages, with performances in Spain, Great Britain and Italy. In 2008 there were again tours with concerts in Spain, France, USA and Japan.
In July 2010 the CD Something For Everybody was delivered in Germany .
On June 24, 2013, ex-drummer Alan Myers died of stomach cancer at the age of 58 . Guitarist Bob Casale died of heart failure on February 17, 2014.
