Heavy Metal (Alternative title: Heavy metal) is a Canadian science fiction - Cartoons from the year 1981 . One of the producers was Leonard Mogel, the editor of the comic magazine Heavy Metal , the US version of Métal hurlant , on which the film is based. With Ivan Reitman as a further producer and Gerald Potterton in the director's chair, the workflow was accelerated by different animation companies working on different parts at the same time.

action

Soft landing
The framework of the film begins with the astronaut Grimaldi, who leaves the hatch of a space shuttle in a Corvette C1 Convertible and crosses the earth's atmosphere with it. He lands on a braking parachute near a manor house , where his young daughter greets him.
Grimaldi
When he arrives at the house, he shows her a hermetically sealed container in which there is a green ball. A short time after he has opened it, the sphere begins to glow, floating and painfully dissolves the astronaut. The ball introduces itself to the horrified girl as "The 'Loc-Nar', the sum of all evil". Before killing the girl, the bullet wants to show her how she has influenced society through time and space. The Loc-Nar then forces the girl to watch several sometimes very frightening stories in which the green ball always plays a central role as the evil driving force.
Harry Canyon
In a dystopian New York in 2031, taxi driver Harry rescues a young woman who is being chased by gangsters. Their father has already been killed because he owned the green spherical artifact called Loc-Nar . Harry and the young woman start an affair, eventually the young woman wants to sell the artifact to the gang boss Rudnick. When she receives the amount of money, she doesn't want to share it with Harry as agreed. This “disintegrates” you without further ado and drives away with the money.
The
A young scientist finds a green meteorite in the garden and brings it into the house. After a lightning experiment, the man is catapulted onto a strange planet, where he finds himself as the muscular hero Den . He can save a beautiful woman there who was almost sacrificed. He is cleverly able to defeat his numerous opponents and decides to stay on the planet with his new girlfriend.
Captain Sterrn
During a trial on a space station, Captain Sterrn is accused of all kinds of offenses. Under the influence of the Loc-Nar , a witness mutates into a brutal berserk . After a sum of money has been paid out, the fighting machine calms down again, but is catapulted into space by Sterrn.
B-17
The Loc-Nar appears in the air during a difficult war mission of an American Boeing B-17 in World War II . The killed soldiers then turn into zombies . The pilot can save himself with the ejection seat . He lands on an island, but there are heaps of wrecked planes and numerous zombies waiting for him.
So beautiful and so dangerous
A huge spaceship appears over the Pentagon and tries to kidnap a scientist with the help of a suction pipe. The on-board robot discovers that a pretty secretary has been "vacuumed" with. After a night of love, the two decide to get married.
Taarna
Bloody conflicts arise on an archaic planet. The elder calls the defender Taarna, the last of her people, to help. She could not prevent the massacre of the townspeople, but seeks revenge. She is able to break free from captivity and kills the leader. Finally, it directs lightning bolts and can use it to explode the green, glowing mass.
epilogue
The glowing green sphere also explodes in the manor house. The girl can escape into the open. There she finds Taarna's flying animal. The girl flies away as the new defender. The power of evil is banned for this generation.

backgrounds

The film is a compilation of several adult-oriented science fiction and fantasy stories, some of which came from Schwermetall magazine, but also independent ones that came from the same spirit. As in the magazine, sexuality and violence were sometimes explicitly portrayed in the film.

The Soft Landing and B-17 episodes were created by Dan O'Bannon , while Harry Canyon and Taarna allude to stories by Jean Giraud : The Long Tomorrow and Arzach, respectively . It was invented by Richard Corben and Captain Sterrn by Bernie Wrightson . So beautiful and so dangerous comes from Angus McKie . Neverwhere Land , an episode by Cornelius Cole, was removed due to the length of the film, but is present on the DVD.

Revenues in US cinemas on March 8, 1996 grossed $ 546,545.

In 2000, a sequel was released under the title Heavy Metal FAKK 2 directed by Kevin Eastman , the current editor of the American comic magazine Heavy Metal of the same name.

In the 12th season of Southpark , the 3rd episode "Hangover" ("Major Boobage") is based on heavy metal.

Many artists known at the time of its creation were won over for the soundtrack to the film:

Reviews

"A remarkable collection of stylistically different stories in terms of tricks, the content of which is only appealing in a few moments, since reactionary behavior patterns, role clichés and violence are conveyed without reflection."

"Illustratively mixed episode film with now nostalgic music and some strong motifs."
