Trust (/ tɹʌst /) is a French rock band that was founded in 1977 and became internationally known in the early 1980s, not least because of their political and socially critical lyrics.

Founding members

  • Bernard Bernie Bonvoisin (vocals)
  • Norbert "Nono" Krief (guitar)
  • Raymond "Ray" Manna (bass)
  • Jean-Émile "Jeannot" Hanela (drums)

history

The beginnings (1977 to 1979)

The first single was released in 1978 and contained the songs Prends pas ton flingue and Paris By Night .

The first album, which was only called Trust , but was later often referred to as "Trust I" or "L'Elite", was recorded with the original line-up mentioned above and released in 1979. Musically the album was a mixture of hard rock with a slight punk influence. “Bernie's” socially critical texts were a source of controversy in the media from the start. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of this, the album was very successful in France, but the great international interest in the band was only aroused with the follow-up album "Repression".

The "golden years" (1980 to 1985)

The album Repression was recorded and released in 1980. In order to also serve the international market, an English version of the album was published in addition to the French version in the same year. In addition to a successful tour of France as headliner ("Répression dans l'Hexagone" tour, recordings were only released as a live album in 1992) Trust now also appeared as the opening act and a. a. for the befriended band AC / DC on their European tour.

In 1981 the Briton Nicko McBrain took over the drums from "Jeannot" Hanela and an additional guitarist was added. With the second guitarist, the sound evolves a little away from hard rock in the direction of heavy metal . They recorded the album Marche Ou Crève and then went on a very successful headlining tour through France. It was not until 1982 that the English language version of the album appeared under the title Savage . In the rest of Europe they played following this release a. a. also as the opening act for the befriended Iron Maiden .

Afterwards it became a little quieter for the group. Nicko McBrain switched to Iron Maiden, in exchange for the drummer Clive Burr , who had previously played with Iron Maiden, went to Trust, but only as a guest musician for the recordings of the next album.

This was released in 1983 and, like the first album, had no title. To distinguish it from “Trust I / L'Elite”, it is often called “Trust IV” or “Ideal” because it was the band's fourth studio album. The next year the English version of the album was released under the title Mans Trap . The album was much more commercial than its predecessor and only sold mediocre.

Trust recorded the album Rock'n'Roll in 1984 , but an English-language version was never recorded because the band fell out after the recordings and split up.

Reunions (1988 to date)

When the American metal band Anthrax covered the Trust song Antisocial in 1988 and was very successful with it, Trust was reunited for the first time. Among other things, they played two concerts as Iron Maiden's special guest at the “Monsters of Rock” festival in the sold-out Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris . There is also a live album of these appearances released in 1989.

In the years that followed, the band reunited every few years in different line-ups around “Bernie” and “Nono”. There were concerts, releases of old and new pieces and subsequent separations. The band never found their way back to the old strength and creativity that made Trust the leading French hard rock great of the early 1980s.
