Eckart Spoo (born December 19, 1936 in Mönchengladbach ; † December 15, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German journalist and publicist .

Life

Eckart Spoo attended the Stiftisch-Humanist Gymnasium in Mönchengladbach until he graduated from high school in 1956. From 1962 to 1997 he was editor of the Frankfurter Rundschau ( FR ), where he often published reports that were critical of society from a left-wing socialist perspective. After FR editor Karl Gerold had dismissed him in 1972 because the newspaper had been severely attacked in the book Die Tabus der Westdeutsche Presse published by Spoo , he successfully sued for his reinstatement. In 1997 he left the editorial team at FR, founded the magazine Ossietzky together with other journalists in the same year and became its publisher and responsible editor. He also wrote for the left-wing daily Junge Welt, among others .

From 1970 to 1986 Spoo was chairman of the German Union of Journalists (dju) in the IG Druck und Papier . In 2003 he gave numerous speeches at demonstrations against the Iraq war . From 2006 to 2009 he was an appointed member of the Board of Trustees of the Movement Foundation . He was a board member of the German Holocaust Museum Foundation . Spoo last lived in Berlin.
