Wolfgang Richter (born January 14, 1940 in Reichenberg , Reichsgau Sudetenland ; † February 11, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German author and co-founder of the Society for the Protection of Civil Rights and Human Dignity (GBM).

Life

Richter first grew up in Reichenberg, Bohemia . Towards the end of the Second World War , his family was expelled and came to the territory of the Soviet occupation zone . He passed his Abitur examination in the GDR in 1959 and then studied philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB). There he then worked in the Marxism-Leninism section and, after its dissolution, until 1992 at the Institute for Peace and Conflict Research, whose employees were recruited from the dissolved section.

In 1991 Richter was one of the co-founders of the Society for the Protection of Civil Rights and Human Dignity , became its chairman and headed it until 2012. In that year he received the human rights award awarded by the society.

Richter was co-editor of a seven-volume white book with the title Unfrieden in Deutschland , about what the editors believe was discrimination against East German scientists, artists and the creative arts.

According to the Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Richter justified the persecution of opponents of the regime by the GDR and the state security . He denied "the obvious deficits of the GDR with regard to human rights ".

In 2010 he supported a declaration by representatives and numerous SED functionaries of the GDR 20 years after German reunification : “Request to speak on the 20th year of the enlarged Federal Republic”.
