Life

The son of a lock keeper from Leer / Ostfriesland attended elementary school from 1946 to 1954. From 1954 to 1959 he completed his training and then worked as an employee in the city administration of Leer. He volunteered in the DGB youth work and with the Jusos . From 1958 Götz was chairman of the Jusos for the Weser / Ems district and a member of the Jusos Federal Committee. After completing basic military service , from January 1, 1960 to June 30, 1963, he was a consultant for questions relating to the "internal leadership" of the Bundeswehr in the SPD parliamentary group and assistant to Fritz Erler .

From July 1, 1963 to 1971, Götz was Federal Youth Secretary of the Trade, Banks and Insurance Union (HBV) in Düsseldorf . As a supporter of the Bundeswehr, he was heavily controversial within the Federal Youth Committee of the DGB. At the 3rd Federal Youth Conference in 1968, he strongly advocated the HBV-Jugend's position on political issues and called for more intensive political education work and the involvement of youth organizations in trade union work. Politically, he represented the principles of peaceful coexistence between the Federal Republic and GDR and supported declarations of the Federal Youth Conference against the Vietnam War and the military dictatorship in Greece .

From 1972 to September 1980 he worked as the responsible editor and press spokesman for the HBV main board. The former Bundeswehr propagandist was heavily involved in the peace movement, which earned him renewed criticism within the DGB because of his change of attitude. Among other things, he supported the awarding of the "War Prize" by the HBV union on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair to Heinz Konsalik . The alternative to the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade was intended to uncover peace-threatening tendencies in literature and to brand books with content that was harmless to the war. From 1980 to 1992 Götz was a member of the main executive board of HBV, where he was responsible for youth, co-determination, educational and cultural work, tariff policy in the housing industry and in travel agencies. From 1980 to 1993 he was a member of the supervisory boards of Horten AG and Rank Xerox GmbH, among others .

Since 1993 he has worked as a freelance journalist and book author and was a member of the Association of German Writers (VS). Among other things, he wrote a portrait of the former DGB chairman Heinz Oskar Vetter and a biography of Bertha von Suttner . There were also publications on socio-political topics and two volumes of aphorisms .

Together with his wife Irene, he was killed on July 25, 2000 when the Concorde crashed near Paris .
