The Movement Foundation is a nationwide community foundation based in Verden (Aller) . The purpose of the foundation is to identify the causes of societal, political and social problems and to combat them. The background is the view that social grievances are often only initiated by social movements that articulate public protest . Political actions and protest campaigns by social movements at home and abroad are funded with grants and advice. The movements supported include the peace movement , the environmental movement and the movement of critics of globalization .

The Movement Foundation is a signatory of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative .

history

The foundation was established in 2002 by nine founding donors and endowed with endowment capital of 250,000 euros. In 2012 there were 130 donors and the capital had grown to five million euros. In 2017, a long-standing donor transferred an extraordinary one million euros, increasing the foundation's capital to over seven million euros. The movement foundation states that the aim is to support the work of social movements for democracy , peace , ecology and social justice through grants and advice. As of 2016, over 100 campaigns and organizations were funded with a total of more than three million euros. In June 2003, another foundation was established under the umbrella of the Movement Foundation. The foundation bridge aims to promote civil rights in the digital society.

advancement

The award of grants is decided twice a year. The prerequisite for funding is a non-violent, ecologically compatible, equal, transparent, democratic and fair working method of the people, projects or institutions being funded. In order to ensure that the funds are used effectively, the Movement Foundation develops criteria for evaluating the project work.

The movement foundation supports medium to long-term campaigns, as part of basic funding, but also the establishment and development of organizations over several years.

Funded projects include Attac , .ausgestrachte , Lobbycontrol , Pinkstinks Germany , Women in Exile, NoLager Netzwerk, Urgewald and the Seebrücke Alliance .

The foundation supports social movements on two different levels:

First on the financial level, because in the opinion of the foundation it is only possible to plan, organize and carry out projects, actions and campaigns with financial resources. And these resources are insufficiently available in many social movements.

Furthermore, the projects are supported and advised by the foundation during the funding period. In addition, specialist seminars on topics such as fundraising , press work and conflict resolution are offered.

There is a special funding instrument for people who want to get so involved in political or social projects that they are not in a position to earn all of their livelihood: As so-called movement workers, they are looking for sponsors who will be coordinated by the movement foundation provide financial support. Cécile Lecomte and Jutta Sundermann belong or belonged to this group, which consists of up to ten people.

In contrast to charitable foundations, the movement foundation wants to promote change instead of charity and therefore sees itself as a “change foundation ”.

structure

Since January 1, 2008, the Movement Foundation has been an independent foundation with a democratic basic structure, which grants both the donors and the supported projects and movement workers a say.

The highest decision-making body is the five-person foundation council , which decides in particular on funding. It is composed of one elected representative each from the advisory board of the founders and the assembly of the funded projects as well as three appointed persons with special experience in or knowledge of social movements. The advisory board of the founders and the assembly of the funded projects advise the foundation board in its decisions.

There is also an investment committee that deals with investments, asset management and investment criteria.

Once a year donors, representatives of the funded projects, movement workers and foundation employees meet for a two-and-a-half-day strategy workshop in Berlin to discuss the further development of the foundation.

Endowment options

Endowments from an amount of 5,000 euros grant the founder a lifelong right to vote on the founder's advisory board. This allows him to influence funding decisions and participate in the election of the founder 's representative on the Board of Trustees. The endowment of 5,000 euros can also be paid in ten annual installments of 500 euros. In this case, too, the right to vote is given immediately.

Investment

In order to also support political and social change in the investment sector, the foundation capital is fully based on self-imposed ethical and ecological criteria (e.g. at the GLS Bank , Ethics Bank and Environmental Bank , in renewable energies, as well as in alternative housing projects and economic activity). The regular return is almost three percent. In addition, the movement foundation attaches great importance to the transparency of investments. The investment criteria and all investments are therefore published on the Internet.

Foundation bridge

In June 2003, the trust foundation " bridge - civil rights in the digital society " was founded under the umbrella of the Bewegungsstiftung with a start-up capital of 120,000 euros by the founding founder Frank Hansen from Schwäbisch Hall. The co-initiators are political scientists Felix Kolb and Gerald Neubauer. In December 2015, it had foundation capital of around one million euros, which was made available by six donors.

The founding was motivated by the increasing importance of digital technologies and media in numerous areas of life and the associated risk of "undermining civil rights" (in particular through the loss of informational self-determination and through increasing monitorability). The foundation bridge supports social movements that organize campaigns on these topics. On the one hand, it supports medium to long-term campaigns. On the other hand, it supports individual organizations on a long-term basis by means of “basic funding”. The foundation provides support through financial resources and professional advice. The foundation bridge works according to the same principles as the movement foundation.
