Cécile Stephanie Lecomte (born December 8, 1981 in Épinal , France) is a French environmental activist living in Germany .

Many of her activities have to do with climbing , which is why she is nicknamed The Squirrel . At first she took part in actions within the framework of the anti-globalization and pacifist movements. In the meantime, she puts her actions primarily in the context of the anti-nuclear movement , but also the movement critical of consumption and the movement against genetic engineering . Most recently, she appeared in the context of the protests against the Stuttgart 21 train station project . Because of her actions of civil disobedience , she was convicted several times by German courts or taken into custody as a preventive measure “to avert danger”. She has acquired legal knowledge through self-study, her own processes and cooperation with legal aid groups. In the meantime she not only defends herself, but also "campaigners" in criminal proceedings in court. Lecomte also works as a journalist, gives lectures and participates in the international networking of social movements. Life

Cécile Stéphanie Lecomte was born on December 8, 1981 in Épinal ( Vosges ), France. She grew up in Orléans and got enthusiastic about mountaineering at an early age . She took her first steps in Fontainebleau ( bouldering ) and during the holidays she went with her mother to the Alps for mountaineering in the Mont-Blanc area, for touring skiing or rock climbing. She won the youth championships in sport climbing and participated in international championships. Even in her youth, Lecomte was involved in political groups.

Lecomte studied business administration at the University of Bayreuth . During her studies she was involved in the Green University Group in Bayreuth. Later she moved to the University of Erlangen , where she was active in the Green Youth and also ran for committees in university self-administration. She also has a degree as a French language teacher. Lecomte initially taught French at schools in Lüneburg between 2005 and 2007 . She planned her actions, which received a lot of media coverage, in her spare time. After the termination of her employment, Lecomte devoted herself entirely to politics. Government monitoring of her political activities, pressure on the school management because of her political commitment and a chronic autoimmune disease ( rheumatoid arthritis ) that is difficult to combine with her profession as a teacher - Lecomte is now 80% severely disabled - helped her to take this step. She is now dependent on crutches and a wheelchair - but continues to climb. She reports about her experiences with disabilities in everyday life in her blog under the tag “being different”. In 2008 she moved into a construction trailer , in 2010 she was co-founder of the Lebenswagen association, which is committed to sedentary life in temporary buildings . Since January 2018 she has been living in the self-managed tenement syndicate, the open space and housing project Unfug in Lüneburg. She finances her livelihood as a full-time activist through regular financial donations from over 30 people as part of the “movement workers” support program of the movement foundation and is co-editor of the monthly Graswurzelrevolution . She describes herself in the introduction to her autobiographical book Come down there! as a "journalist and action climbing artist". With her book she goes on a reading tour all over Germany and reports on her experiences as an activist.

Actions (selection)

• Tree occupations
  • In January 2007, Cécile Lecomte occupied trees in Lüneburg against road expansion. According to the Internet platform Indymedia , the campaign was then ended by a SEK .
  • In September 2007 she carried out a tree occupation against lignite opencast mining in Lakoma near Cottbus.
  • In 2008 the environmental activist protested against the expansion of the airport there by occupying another tree in Kelsterbach .
  • In winter 2009/2010, together with the Robin Wood initiative, she carried out several tree occupations as part of the Stop Moorburgtrasse campaign .
  • Again and again she supports the lignite resistance in the Rhineland through actions and tree occupations
  • In 2016 and 2017 she supported the tree occupation against the Cigéo nuclear research center in Bure, France
• "Aerial acrobatics against nuclear transports"
  • In 2008, the French woman blocked two uranium waste trains near Burgsteinfurt for several hours .
  • In 2009 Lecomte protested a third time in Münster against the transport of nuclear waste to France.
  • In 2010 she carried out a rappelling action against the Castor transport to Gorleben .
  • In 2011 Lecomte took part in an action to block the Castor train to Gorleben near Fulda and therefore spent three days in the Preungesheim prison .
  • In 2012 she carried out an action to block a canal ship that was supposed to transport a steam generator from the shutdown nuclear power plant in Obrigheim via the Dortmund-Ems Canal to Lubmin . In doing so, she rappeled down from the canal bridge on Wolbecker-Strasse in Münster and blocked the ship's onward journey until the lock in Münster ceased operations in the evening, so that the ship had to stay in Münster overnight. The blockade was ended by a special police unit, Lecomte arrested, but released the following day from custody. She was later sentenced to a fine of 20 euros for "incorrect use of a shipping facility".
  • In 2012, she and other activists blocked two uranium trains from the uranium enrichment plant in Gronau ( North Rhine-Westphalia) to Pierrelatte (France) by climbing .
  • In 2014 she took part in several actions and blockades against the handling of uranium in the port of Hamburg .
  • From April 6 to 7, 2016, she rappelled down from a railway bridge with another activist in Buchholz in the Nordheide to stop a uranium concentrate train. The train stood at Buchholz station for about 4 hours. The OLG Celle declared her detention in the course of the protest action illegal. The fine of 500 euros imposed by the local court for violating the railway building and operating regulations was overturned by the higher regional court.
  • On June 28, 2017, she took part in a rappelling action with other Robin Wood activists against the Castor transport on the Neckar. The castor came to a stop because of the action. During the castor transports that followed, she took part in swimming campaigns in the Neckar .
• Field actions against genetic engineering
  • In 2008 Lecomte, together with the “Gendreckweg” initiative, destroyed a field with genetically modified maize from Monsanto .
  • In 2009 the French woman occupied a field in Groß Lüsewitz near Rostock before sowing .
  • In 2011 she organized a tripod campaign against the conference of the genetic engineering lobby in Üplingen.
• Anti-militarism
  • In 2008 the environmental activist chained herself to railroad tracks to prevent military transport near Husum .
  • In 2017, she abseiled from the facade of a high-rise building in Lüneburg to demonstrate against a returnees by the Bundeswehr .
• Consumer criticism
  • In January 2009 Lecomte protested against wasteful consumption by adbusting and climbing the facade of the Deutsche Bank .
  • In March 2015, she took part in the Blockupy protests in Frankfurt am Main with a climbing campaign on a bank tower that was critical of capitalism and consumption .

Criminal convictions

In July 2009 the Kitzingen District Court sentenced Cécile Lecomte to a fine of 675 euros for damage to property . In mid-April 2010, the Frankfurt am Main district court was convicted of trespassing in three cases, one of which was coercive , with a fine of 120 euros. On 30 June 2010 the District Court Würzburg confirmed the judgment of the District Court rejected the Kitzingen and both of Lecomte and by the prosecution appeal brought appeal . On April 1, 2016, the Dortmund Shipping Court imposed enforcement detention against Cécile Lecomte for one day because she had not paid the € 20 fine for the Münster campaign. However, she did not start the detention because the fine was paid by the prison director - probably for fear of political actions in and in front of the prison.
