Libertad was a nationwide initiative for the freedom of all political prisoners worldwide. She also campaigned against state repression and repression . It existed from 1993 to 2016.

Libertad was created after the congress against the world economic summit in Munich in 1992. During the forum “Democracy and Human Rights in the New World Order”, activists from several solidarity committees agreed on joint activities to support political prisoners. The group went public in the fall of 1993 with the appeal "Freedom for all political prisoners worldwide", which contained the idea of ​​an international day for the freedom of political prisoners. This resulted in the nationwide day of action on March 18th, which has been celebrated since 1996, mostly in cooperation with other left-wing organizations such as the Red Aid or the Berlin Anti-Racist Initiative .

The organization began the campaign against the introduction of Type F prisons and solitary confinement in Turkey in 2000 . In 2001, the initiative organized, together with no man is illegal, the online demonstration against the involvement of Deutsche Lufthansa AG in deportations . Since 2004 Libertad! Campaigns against torture , extraterritorial camps like in Guantánamo Bay and for online activism .

Between 2001 and at least 2008, three activists of the organization were illegally monitored by the Federal Criminal Police Office on suspicion of membership in the militant group (mg) . These surveillance measures are based on information from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The Federal Court gave a decision in March 2010 before the Constitutional protection to have provided no facts for his claims.

The initiative dissolved on March 18, 2016.
