Katrin Saks (born November 29, 1956 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . From October 2006 to October 2009 she was a member of the European Parliament .

education

Katrin Saks graduated from Tallinn High School in 1975 . Until 1981 she studied journalism at the University of Tartu . From 1977 to 1993 she worked as an editor and from 1993 to 1997 as program manager for Estonian Television ( Eesti Televisioon ). In 1993 she also completed the International Relations course at the Estonian School of Diplomats.

politician

In 1998, Katrin Saks went into politics and joined the Mõõdukad party , which in 2004 was renamed the Social Democratic Party of Estonia ( Eesti Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Erakond ). From 1999 to 2002, Katrin Saks was Minister of Population in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Laar and was primarily responsible for the integration of the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia .

Subsequently, Saks was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) from 2003 to 2006 . In October 2006 she succeeded Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who was elected President of Estonia, as a member of the European Parliament . In 2009 she left the European Parliament.

Since February 2011 Saks has been the director of the Baltic Film and Media School ( Balti Filmi- ja Meediakool ), which is part of Tallinn University .

Private life

Katrin Saks is married. She has a daughter and a son.
