Richard Corben

Richard Corben (born November 1, 1940 on a farm near Anderson , Missouri ) is an American comic book artist. Corben is also one of the most important artists of the underground comix of the 1970s . What works like Razar the Unhero , When Dreams Collide , Mangle Robot Mangler show, is initially about a critical examination of the superheroes, who were omnipresent at the time. In the course of this conflict, Corben gradually developed the basic components of his heroes and their opponents, the monsters, a process that came to a preliminary end with the creation of the characters " Den " and "Lizardman" ( Grim Wit No. 2, 1973).

He became internationally known through France when in 1975 Jean Giraud , Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet and Bernard Farkas, the comic magazine Métal hurlant in France founded and Corben published stories there. In the US, the magazine was titled Heavy Metal , in Germany under heavy metal .

With the help of a special painting technique geared towards the sculptural design of objects and figures, Corben succeeds in developing atmospherically gloomy alternative worlds , for example in Neverwhere , the first volume in the Den series, from the world of the Aztecs and from HP Lovecraft inspires. A special trademark of Corbens art is the body-hugging representation of the protagonists in the form of naked male muscled muscles and busty, lightly or not at all dressed women.

The term graphic novel , which is widely used in the comic scene today , appears for the first time in 1976 in connection with the publication of Richard Corben's album Bloodstar .

Some of Corbens' works have also been filmed. His story Hero was the basis for a sequence of the cartoon Heavy Metal . For the video- only film The Dark Planet (1989), which he also produced, he wrote the script, directed and also took on a role.
