Life

By his own account, Al Lewis was born Albert Meister on April 30, 1910 in Wolcott, New York. However, after Al Lewis' death on February 3, 2006, his son Ted announced that his father was not actually born in Brooklyn, NY until April 30, 1923. Because of the fact that his date of birth is actually 13 years later, many other life dates of Al Lewis from the time before 1950 appear questionable today.

According to his own information, he began working as an artist at the circus in the late 1920s. He then decided to go to college. He graduated from Columbia University as a child psychologist . He then worked as a teacher and wrote two children's books. On the advice of a friend, Lewis began acting in 1949. He took lessons at Paul Mann's Actor's Workshop in New York and worked in cabaret across the United States. In the 1950s he started with the booming television . Initially he starred in live broadcasts from New York and in guest roles on television series. From 1961 to 1963 he became famous as Officer Leo Schnauser in the sitcom Car 54, Please Report. His partner was Fred Gwynne as Officer Maldoon. His most famous role was that of Grandpa in The Munsters . The 70-part series was produced from 1964 to 1966. Again, Fred Gwynne played by his side. After the series ended, he opened a restaurant in Greenwich Village called Grampa's Bella Gente . Until recently he moderated a program on a New York radio station.

Lewis was married twice and had three children.

In 1998, Lewis ran for the Green Party in New York's gubernatorial elections. He spoke out in favor of abolishing the death penalty and easing drug legislation. However , he had no chance against incumbent George Pataki . In 2003 his right lower leg had to be amputated due to complications after an angioplasty .

The actor with heart disease died on February 3, 2006 at the age of 82 in New York.
