Fred Gwynne (actually Frederick Hubbard Gwynne ; born July 10, 1926 in New York City , † July 2, 1993 in Taneytown , Maryland ) was an American actor and children's book author .

Life

Fred Gwynne was born to Frederick Walker Gwynne and Dorothy Ficken. After high school, he first went to the Navy to serve as a radio operator on a submarine fighter in the Pacific during World War II .

After his release, the Harvard graduate took acting classes and played on various stages and in some television series for several years. The most famous role of the 1.96 meter tall Fred Gwynne was certainly that of Herman Munster in the television series The Munsters . After The Munsters were removed, Gwynne's career took a turn for the worse as many casting directors saw him committed to the Herman Munster role model.

In the meantime he wrote and illustrated children's books, which Simon & Schuster brought out with great success, and worked as a stage actor.

Nevertheless, in his almost 40-year career in cinema, he appeared in classics such as Die Faust im Nacken , Cotton Club , Eine vergeratzvolle Affäre (with Michael Douglas and Glenn Close ), Wolfsmilch or Woody Allen's Kafka - Hommage Schatten und Nebel and in 1990 in Mord in black and white (with Richard Crenna and Kenneth Welsh ). In the British comedy Water , he appeared as an oil magnate. He had his most famous film role in the cemetery of the cuddly toys based on the novel by Stephen King .

Gwynne was married twice. His first marriage to Jean Reynard, which was divorced in 1980, had five children: Gaynor (* 1952), Keiron Gwynne (* 1954), Evan (* 1956), Madyn (* 1958), Dylan (1960–1963, drowned) ). In 1988 Gwynne married Deborah Flater.

He died of pancreatic cancer on July 2, 1993, just days before his 67th birthday, and was buried in Finksburg , Maryland.
