Gerald Potterton
Gerald Potterton (born March 8, 1931 in London ) is a British - Canadian animator , film director and producer .
Life
Potterton attended Hammersmith Art School . After graduating, he started working as an animation assistant in London. At the age of 24 he emigrated to Canada and became a member of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). In 1962 his debut work, My Financial Career , appeared, for which he was responsible for the first time as a director. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1964 , but could not prevail against The Critic .
In 1963, Potterton co-directed Christmas Cracker alongside Norman McLaren , Jeff Hale and Grant Munro . With the film he also won the Golden Gate Award . In 1965 he was the director of the film Train Ride with Buster Keaton , the last silent film by Buster Keaton . With this he received an honorary award from the Berlinale . He also appeared in the documentary Buster Keaton Rides Again .
As an animator, he worked on the animated series Cool McCool (1966–1969) and the Beatles film Yellow Submarine . In the 1970s he shot film and animation passages for the children's series Sesame Street and The Electric Company .
In 1968 he founded his own production company for film and animation. Before it closed in 1974, she produced Peter Sander's The Selfish Giant (1971) , Larry Kents Fleur Bleue (1971), Mike Mills The Happy Prince (1974), The Little Mermaid (1974) and The Christmas Messenger (1975), among others .
His last major work was the 1981 film Heavy Metal , which he co-directed with Jimmy T. Murakami . The film was based on the French heavy metal comics.
In the 1980s and 1990s he continued to work as a director and animator for film and television.
