action

The gilded statue of the lucky prince is admired by the whole city. When a swallow, which has missed the connection with its swarm on the journey south, stops by the statue, the prince tells her how unhappy he really is, since from his high pedestal he can see the suffering of the poor residents of the city able to see. He asks the swallow to bring the gems of his belt and eyes to the arms before it flies on. The swallow fulfills his requests. Since the prince is now blind, she decides not to leave him and, despite the cold, stays with him until winter. At the prince's request, she also removes and distributes the layer of gold that surrounds him. When the swallow finally freezes to death, the lucky prince's leaden heart breaks. The mayor suddenly notices how ugly the statue has become and melts it down. Only the broken heart of the prince cannot be melted and is thrown in the garbage with the dead swallow.

In the epilogue, God asks an angel to bring the two most precious things out of the city for him. The angel chooses the dead swallow and the broken heart of the statue.
