Grant Munro (born April 25, 1923 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , † December 9, 2017 in Montreal , Quebec ) was a Canadian animator , filmmaker and actor. He was honored with the Order of Canada .

Life

Munro was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923. He had a sister and a brother.

He attended Robert H. Smith School, Queenston School, and Gordon Bell High. He then studied at the Musgrove School of Art and Winnipeg School of Art. In 1944 he graduated from the Ontario College of Art and became a member of the National Film Board of Canada .

In 1945 he animated the two songs Oh My Darling, Clementine and The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze . In 1952 he worked as an actor on the short film Neighbors by Norman McLaren . The Oscar-winning work used the new technique of pixilation . His partner and co-star was the animator Jean-Paul Ladouceur . He also worked with McLaren on the films Zwei Bagatellen (1953), Seven Surprizes (1963), Christmas Cracker (1963) and Canon (1964). For Christmas Cracker he won the Golden Gate Award together with Jeff Hale , Norman McLaren and Gerald Potterton . With Norman McLaren he won the Canadian Film Award for Canon in 1965 .

In the 1970s he focused on documentaries. In 1973 he shot Tours en l'air about the dancers Anna Marie and David Holmes. In 1974, Boo Hoo followed through a cemetery and crematorium in Saint John, New Brunswick . The two films Animated Motion and McLaren on McLaren were dedicated to his old partner Norman McLaren. With the 1983 film See You in the Funny Papers , he made a documentary about the comic artist Lynn Johnston . In 1988 he retired.

In 2003 the Museum of Modern Art dedicated a retrospective to him under the title Grant Munro Rediscovered . The occasion was his eightieth birthday.

In 2007 he was made an honorary doctorate from Concordia University .

In 2008 he became an officer in the Order of Canada. He received the award from Governor General Michaëlle Jean for his pioneering work in film and animation.

Munro died in December 2017 at the age of 94.
