Velvet Revolver was an American rock band that is considered a supergroup because of the prominence of its individual members . Previous singer Scott Weiland died in December 2015 after officially leaving the band in 2008.

Band history

Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, former band members from Guns n 'Roses , occurred in September 2002, about five years after leaving this band together at a charity concert for the late drummer of Ozzy Osbourne , Randy Castillo on. In the following time they met more times and finally decided to form a new band. In the founding phase, Izzy Stradlin was first planned as a rhythm guitarist. But this got out again after a short time. This was due to Stradlin's reluctance to work with a lead singer and his aversion to constant touring. In October, Dave Kushner joined the band as a rhythm guitarist. Scott Weiland was quickly identified as the preferred candidate for the post of lead singer, but shortly afterwards lost sight of again. It took another nine months in a row, which was riddled with several renaming in relation to the band name and several changes in line-up with regard to the lead singer. In June 2003 Scott Weiland officially joined the group as lead singer, which from now on called itself Velvet Revolver . The band's first release was the single Set Me Free in 2003 as the theme song for the film adaptation of Hulk . On June 7, 2004, the debut album Contraband was released . As in the USA, this was able to achieve a double platinum award in Canada .

The publication was overshadowed by the fact that singer Scott Weiland had to undergo court-ordered rehabilitation therapy at the same time due to his heroin addiction . He also appeared at a concert in Germany with a cap that resembled an SS cap. The singer later stated that he had nothing to do with the Nazi ideology and that this outfit should be viewed as a gag.

Rumors that the band was about to split up were regularly denied.

The second album Libertad was released in July 2007 and is very much shaped by the death of the brothers Scott Weilands and Matt Sorums. Both died within days of being admitted to Libertad , and both deaths were independently drug-related. Especially the tracks For a Brother , The Last Fight and the Electric Light Orchestra Cover Can't Get It Out of My Head relate to this topic. The album went gold in Canada.

On January 28th, 2008 it was announced that Scott Weiland would soon get back together for a few concerts with his ex-band, the Stone Temple Pilots . The reunion should take place in summer 2008, but this should not have any effect on Velvet Revolver. As Slash claimed, he was ready to start recording the new album. There are no songs yet, but there are a few very promising ideas.

Weiland announced at a concert in Glasgow on March 20, 2008 to the amazement of the rest of the band members, but publicly that the current tour of the band would be the last. Then he left the stage and only came back to perform It's So Easy . Slash announced, however, that the band would not split up and that their current tour would by no means be the last. In an interview with Classic Rock he also said that Scott Weiland has apparently finished with Velvet Revolver and will leave the band after the end of the current tour. In fact, in early April 2008, Scott Weiland and Velvet Revolver parted ways. It is not entirely clear which of the two parties made this decision first. Slash announced the split the day after the last concert on the Libertad tour; the band will still exist. But Scott countered in an email to MTV that he had long been planning to get out of Velvet Revolver to get back to making music with people closer to his personal style - the Stone Temple Pilots .

Since Weiland's departure, the remaining four members have been trying unsuccessfully to find a suitable replacement for him, which is why there have been no further publications since 2007. In January 2012, Velvet Revolver were back on stage with Scott Weiland for the first time in four years, playing four songs together. The occasion was the death of their mutual friend and composer John O'Brien. Immediately speculations arose about a possible reunion. When Weiland was fired from the Stone Temple Pilots in early 2013, these rumors got a boost.

Scott Weiland died on December 3, 2015 in Bloomington , Minnesota of complications from a drug cocktail.
