Scott Richard Weiland (* 27. October 1967 in San Jose , California as Scott Richard Kline ; † 3. December 2015 in Bloomington , Minnesota ) was an American rock musician . He was best known as the singer of the band Stone Temple Pilots .

Life

Scott Weiland was born as Scott Richard Kline to Kent Kline and Sharon Williams. Two years after his birth, the parents divorced. At the age of five, Scott was given his stepfather's family name, Dave Weiland, after the latter adopted him. The family later moved to Chagrin Falls , Ohio and returned to California in 1983 when Scott was 14 years old; she settled in Huntington Beach .

Breakthrough with the Stone Temple Pilots (until 2003)

In 1987 Weiland founded the band Mighty Joe Young with the brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz, which became the Stone Temple Pilots. In 1992 the band achieved their international breakthrough. After great success in the 1990s and five studio albums, the group disbanded in 2003.

In 1993, Weiland first took heroin and quickly became addicted; a rehab in 1994 was unsuccessful. In 1995 the singer was arrested for the first time for possession of heroin and crack . In March 1998, Weiland's first solo album, 12 Bar Blues , was released, which had a more experimental sound than the music of his main band at the time and was not a great commercial success. In November 2000, Weiland made a one-off appearance with the remaining members of the Doors ; his performance was highly praised.

Velvet Revolver (2003-2008)

After the preliminary end of the Stone Temple Pilots in 2003, Weiland joined Velvet Revolver , an all-star band consisting of ex- Guns-n'-Roses members Slash , Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan as well as Dave Kushner (formerly Suicidal Tendencies ) .

On June 8, 2004, the album Contraband was released , which climbed to the top of the album charts in the United States. The single Slither was awarded a Grammy in 2005. The album reached number 7 in Germany.

The album Libertad followed on July 3, 2007 . After the tour, the musicians parted ways and Weiland temporarily returned to his old band.

Because of his long-standing drug addiction, which he repeatedly claimed to have overcome, and his sometimes quick temper, he kept making headlines and had to appear in court several times for the same reasons. From April 2008 he was no longer a member of Velvet Revolver, for which his former bandmates blamed his drug use.

On January 12, 2012, Weiland performed again with the band. The occasion was the death of John O'Brien, composer and friend of the band. This led to reunion rumors surrounding the band, which had not found a new singer since separating from Weiland and eventually broke up.

Reunification with the Stone Temple Pilots (2008-2013)

In spring 2008, the Stone Temple Pilots, which dissolved in 2003, reunited with Weiland on the microphone, and in 2010 a new studio album was released. On February 28, 2013, the band announced on their website that they had parted ways with Weiland by "official termination". Reasons for this were initially not given. Later on, the remaining band members named Weiland's growing unpredictability and unreliability, which would have led to the cancellation of several performances. Weiland's initial reaction was surprised. On May 19, 2013 it was announced that Chester Bennington had become the new singer of the Stone Temple Pilots.

In January 2009, Weiland's second solo album "Happy" was released in Galoshes . In 2011, Weiland released a Christmas album called Most Wonderful Time of the Year , which contains ten tracks, as well as an exclusive download album called New - A Compilation of Scott Weiland's Cover Songs and twelve cover songs (by, among others, Nirvana , Depeche Mode or the Rolling Stones ).

In August 2014, the TMZ.com website reported that Weiland had been arrested in Beverly Hills , California a month earlier after police found methamphetamine and other banned substances on him. He was released from prison on $ 95,000 bail. That same year he said in interviews that he was clean again. A short time later, Weiland reported from his studio: He called the TMZ report on his drug problems a lie and announced legal action.

The Wildabouts and Death (2015)

In 2015 he released the album Blaster with his new band The Wildabouts. Just one day before the release, guitarist Jeremy Brown passed away on March 30, 2015 at the age of 34 due to a drug overdose. Weiland himself also showed signs of deteriorating health and sometimes did not hit the right note at concerts.

Weiland died on December 3, 2015 at the age of 48 from complications from a drug cocktail made from crack, ecstasy (MDMA) and alcohol. He was found dead on his tour bus shortly before performing in Bloomington , Minnesota . He left behind his wife, Jamie Weiland, and two children from a previous marriage to Mary Forsberg Weiland. In connection with Weiland's death, Tommy Black, bassist for the band, was arrested for drug possession.
