The Stone Temple Pilots are one of San Diego in California native American rock band . It became known during the height of grunge . The band split up in 2003 and reunited in the spring of 2008. In 2013 the band separated from singer Scott Weiland , who died in December 2015. His successor, Chester Bennington , had left the group a month earlier. Jeff Gutt has been the singer of the Stone Temple Pilots since 2017 .

The band's first five albums sold over 17 million copies in the United States alone. The band reached 15 top ten singles on the Billboard Rock chart , including six number one hits. The 1994 album Purple peaked at number one on the Billboard Pop Charts . The STP won the 1994 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocals for the title Plush from the album Core .

Band history

origin

Two of the band's founding members, Scott Weiland and Corey Hickok, met in Huntington Beach , California when Weiland's family returned from Chagrin Falls , Ohio in 1983 while they were both attending high school there . Hickok had already played in a band with his brother and, after their breakup, asked Weiland if he wanted to join a newcomer as a singer, since Weiland had already sung in a school choir in Ohio. Together with the electric bass player Dave Stokes and drummer David Allin they formed the group Soi-Disant . After Allin left, Scott Tubbs replaced him, and Britt Willits also joined as keyboardist.

Foundation of Swing

After a while the desire to develop the band grew in Hickok. During a performance by the band in 1987 in a dance club for over 21-year-olds - to which the band members had gained access with forged ID cards - they asked for an electric bass player from the audience when Robert DeLeo answered and with the Band performed together. He, Weiland, and Hickok recorded several pieces at DeLeo's own studio in Long Beach , California. The three agreed to work together and founded the band Swing . They advertised the position of drummer in a magazine. Although a candidate was found, he was turned down after a few appearances due to his private environment. After a while, Eric Kretz approached the group, convinced them with his game and was accepted into the group.

The band later moved to an apartment in Culver City , California with Weiland's girlfriend to live closer to Los Angeles . There the group came into contact with No Doubt and Tom Morello's band Lock Up , with whom they performed together. Until then, Hickok took over the songwriting alone, until DeLeo also participated and wrote some pieces independently. Over time, DeLeo took over the songwriting completely, with Hickok only acting supportively. The band's first releases include a. the song Love Machine , which is strongly influenced by the funk of the 1970s.

Style changes and first renaming

After this time, the band oriented more and more to the rock music of the 1970s, with Weiland in particular being inspired by The Doors and vocally by the style of Jim Morrison . In unity with this change in style, the use of the instruments also adapted. So the keyboard was no longer used, so Willits left the band. With this change, the group renamed itself in 1989 in Mighty Joe Young . At the same time, the band wanted to adapt to the sound of general rock music of the time; in particular, there should be more guitar solos.

Further course

Inspired by stickers with the letters STP (a brand of motor oil), they tried to develop a name from it and then called themselves Shirley Temple's Pussy . After demo recordings and performances, Atlantic Records signed the band in 1992 and made them call themselves Stone Temple Pilots in the future. That same year, the band's first album, Core , was released in November . To date, Core has been sold around 7 million times in the United States. A large number of the albums were produced by Brendan O'Brien . The band's dynamic hard rock , which was initially heavily influenced by grunge , earned its members not only a growing following, but also the malice of many critics who considered the music to be epigonal and too commercial: Quite a few reviewers were more concerned with the (actual or supposed ) Borrowings from bands like Soundgarden or Pearl Jam as well as partly with the drug problems of the singer Scott Weiland, which worsened as a result. The singles Plush and Creep were meanwhile great successes in the United States and Europe, and the often biting reporting in the trade press could not do much to the success of the band.

Purple Concert Travel Ticket, 1994

In May 1994 the album Purple followed , with which the band broke away from the grunge scene with a more poppy style. By adding psychedelic elements, the band shaped their own style more strongly. The album immediately rose to number 1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for three weeks. The singles Vasoline and especially the catchy Interstate Love Song became big hits. With success, however, the singer's drug problems continued to worsen; the 1995 studio sessions to record new material failed because of the lack of discipline Weiland, who was now more and more often absent and stayed away from the band's obligations.

The album Tiny Music… Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop was finally released at the end of March 1996 and entered the charts at number 5. The publication received double platinum for over two million copies sold. The song material was of very different quality, on the other hand, for the first time many critics who had previously accused the band of being indifferent, fell silent. The Stone Temple Pilots presented a clearly 60ies-heavy record that was trained by the Beatles and oscillated between pop grandeur and hard rock. The more the band developed as a musician, the more the record sales fell. The criticism pointed out that the band is now apparently able to develop its own style, but the audience was ungracious. Canceled tours and appearances were also the order of the day due to Weiland's drug addiction and prevented the material from being promoted accordingly.

The members finally devoted themselves to solo projects in 1997. In 1998 Weiland recorded his album 12 Bar Blues , while the remaining three musicians recorded the album Talk Show with Ten Inch Men singer Dave Coutts .

In 1999 the Stone Temple Pilots recorded the No. 4 , which contained a cross-section from the previous albums: The disjointed element of Weiland's solo record, the band's 60ies influences and the psychedelic hard rock of the first two albums shaped the record. No video could be made for the first single Down because Scott Weiland had violated his probation requirements and was imprisoned for five months. The band therefore resorted to archive material. The single Sour Girl was a small success in Germany.

On the following tour through the United States, the band completed around 200 appearances, some of which took place with the Red Hot Chili Peppers . The album No. 4 eventually went platinum for four million records sold in the US.

In 2001 the band released their last album, Shangri-La Dee Da . The Stone Temple Pilots went on tour with Staind and Linkin Park . After a fight between Scott Weiland and Dean DeLeo , the band broke up in 2003. In the same year, the Best of album Thank you followed . The band members went their separate ways for the time being.

Singer Scott Weiland founded the all-star band Velvet Revolver in 2003 with former members of Guns N 'Roses . Dean and Robert DeLeo founded the band Army of Anyone with Richard Patrick von Filter in 2005 . Drummer Eric Kretz opened the Bomb Shelter Studio in Los Angeles . Scott Weiland left Velvet Revolver in April 2008; shortly afterwards his old band reunited: On May 21, 2010 the Stone Temple Pilots released their first new studio album since 2001, it was simply called Stone Temple Pilots and received a positive response from the fans. Numerous appearances on several continents followed.

On February 28, 2013, the band surprisingly announced on the website that they had separated from singer Scott Weiland by "official termination". The reasons for this have not yet been given. On May 19, 2013 it was announced that Chester Bennington was the band's new singer. Bennington, who had already worked once with the Stone Temple Pilots in 2001, performed together with the band, which among other things played the new song Out of Time . He was also the front man of his previous band Linkin Park .

While Scott Weiland spoke up publicly and stated that he had neither left the Stone Temple Pilots, which he co-founded, nor was it legal for the three other musicians to perform with Bennington as Stone Temple Pilots , it was also announced that his previous ones Colleagues sued him because he was responsible for significant financial losses and breaches of contract during the last tour due to his unreliability.

In October 2013, High Rise was the first and only EP with Chester Bennington.

Bennington left the band in early November 2015. Both he and the band said the split was amicable. Bennington gave appointments with Linkin Park and family reasons that made it “impossible to continue his time as a singer with STP”. Bennington died in July 2017.

On December 3, 2015, shortly before performing in Bloomington , Minnesota , Scott Weiland was found lifeless on the tour bus of his band Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts . He died at the age of 48.

After the position of singer in the band was vacant again due to Bennington's departure, the band decided in February 2016 to fill the position through a casting. The audition began on April 18, 2016. On November 14, 2017, the band presented themselves with their new singer Jeff Gutt, who had emerged from the audition. On the same day, the band released the single Meadow and performed live again under the title Stone Temple Pilots Reborn . In addition, the band announced a new album for the first half of 2018, which - like the sixth studio album from 2010 - is self-titled and released on March 16 of that year.
