Purple is the second studio album of American grunge - band Stone Temple Pilots .

background

Work on the album began in late 1993 and lasted until early 1994. As with the debut , the producer was Core Brendan O'Brien, who also produced the band's three subsequent studio albums. It was finally released in the United States on June 7, 1994 through Atlantic Records. The first single to be released was Big Empty , which was performed live in 1993 as part of the band's " MTV Unplugged " concert. Other singles in the course of the year were Vasoline and Interstate Love Song , for which - apart from Big Empty - there were also music videos that were shot under the direction of Kevin Kerslake. Unglued and Pretty Penny were also released as promosingles that were distributed to radio stations and magazines .

On the artwork, the title Purple was represented by a Chinese character (the only exception is the European limited edition in vinyl format), just like the entire cover shows Asian influences. It shows a child who rides a kite and waves to the viewer. A group of people can be seen in the background. On the cover of the cassette, the child is holding the Chinese characters in his waving hand and is not in the corner, as shown on the CD cover. There are currently two different pressings of the CD with a different pattern. One with flowers and another with dragon scales. The tint of the LP cover is also different in different countries or versions. On the back of the cover, the titles are not given as is usual. Instead, the inscription 12 Gracious Songs is in the form of a cake .

Chart placements

Purple is still the best Stone Temple Pilots album based on the chart positions. However, the album could not come close to the debut in terms of sales or awards for music sales. In the USA, the band reached the top position on the American Billboard 200 with Purple , where the album lasted three weeks. In the United Kingdom it came in at number ten, in Switzerland at number 25, in Austria at number 18 and in Germany at number 15. In all the countries mentioned, it is the highest ranking that the band has ever achieved with an album.

Purple Concert Tour Ticket, 1994

The reviews of Purple were mostly positive. In Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht was of the opinion that with this album the band could no longer be accused of stealing their ideas. One could guess where the band's influences were, but the pieces themselves would sound completely independent: “Relaxed rock songs with clean instrumentation, sophisticated melodies, emotional vocals and extremely successful arrangements. The poignant 'Still Remains' that sends cold shivers down my spine is just one example. It is followed by a beautiful number called 'Pretty Penny', which is only performed with acoustic guitar, vocals and a few subtle bongos. The relatively aggressive 'Vaseline' and the single hit suspect, melancholic opener 'Meatplow' are also among the absolute highlights of 'Purple'. Although the pilots on the B-side run out of breath a little towards the end (only the funny closing song 'Kitchenware And Candy Bars' is out of the ordinary due to its foggy nightclub atmosphere), but all in all STP have A convincing record delivered here, which one definitely cannot paraphrase with the terms 'grunge', 'metal' or 'alternative'. 'Feeling' is the magic word, because the STONE TEMPLE PILOTS have packed a lot of it into their songs. A big compliment for that. ”As a final note, Albrecht awarded nine out of ten possible points. The album was also classified in the Dynamite category.
