The Doors were an American West Coast rock band . The group is considered one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. According to the sources, they have sold more than 80 million records in their careers, making them one of the performers with the highest number of records sold worldwide . The Doors' most successful release is the album The Best of The Doors with around 11.6 million units sold.
The Doors were one of the very few rock groups without a permanent electric bass player . During live performances, Ray Manzarek took over numerous bass parts with his organ; Guest bassists sometimes took part in studio recordings.
Band history
Foundation phase
The band The Doors was formed in the summer of 1965 by Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek on the beach in Venice Beach ( California ). The band name was based on the essay by Aldous Huxley The Doors of Perception ( The gates of perception ) . Aldous Huxley took the title of his essay from a quote from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell :
- "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite."
- ("If the gates of perception were cleaned, everything would appear to people as it is in reality: infinite .")
After Morrison Manzarek had performed some of his compositions (including Moonlight Drive ), he was so impressed by Morrison's poetic potential that he suggested he start a band. Manzarek had already founded Rick and the Ravens with his brothers . However, they left the new band after Morrison joined them.
Morrison and Manzarek started looking for suitable musicians. During a meditation class , they happened to meet Robby Krieger and John Densmore , who played guitar and drums . Manzarek compensated for the lack of a bassist by playing the rhythmic accompaniment on a Vox Continental organ with one hand and the bass accompaniment on a Fender Rhodes piano bass with the other . In turn, Krieger was able to impress Morrison in particular with the tonal possibilities of his bottleneck game.
success
After a few appearances, including with Sonny and Cher at a high school prom or at parties and dance events, the Doors signed a contract with Columbia , which at the time also had artists like Bob Dylan under contract. However, no record appeared there, so the contract was terminated by mutual agreement shortly thereafter. The contract brought Manzarek the possession of a new Vox Continental organ.
The Doors played for a while at the London Fog Club for little money and developed their individual style of music there, while Jim Morrison developed his stage presence there. Morrison is said to have been very shy at first and turned his back on the audience for a long time.
After appearing in the London Fog , they switched to the prestigious Whiskey A Go-Go , in which well-known bands from Los Angeles such as Love had played. The Doors became the house band for several months and played as a permanent opening act for the top acts. Her song The End contained the oedipal lines that later made him famous: "Father, I want to kill you, Mother I want to ..." - an inarticulate cry followed. Morrison only uttered "fuck you!" Once, whereupon the owner of the club immediately forbade all further appearances of the band. Shortly thereafter, Elektra Records signed the Doors.
Despite several drug experiences, especially in the early days of the Doors, Manzarek, unlike Morrison, kept a certain distance from the excesses that were sometimes common at that time. Robby Krieger didn't mind throwing in a "trip" every now and then. John Densmore was less averse to debauchery.
Ray Manzarek played a decisive role in shaping the band's music through his organ play, and he and guitarist Robby Krieger improvised in long solos. Manzarek himself described the active time as a Doors keyboardist as a time of the highest fulfillment, although he was critical of some excesses away from the stage and especially the growing split personality of the lead singer Morrison. During the live performances, Manzarek was able to intervene in the action thanks to his own microphone, which is why his deep, pithy voice can be heard in many live recordings. He sang some pieces himself , for example Close to You . Nevertheless, the band owes its great popularity above all to the charismatic singer Jim Morrison, who gave the group a face. The stage show, characterized by improvisation and Morrison's eccentric demeanor, was striking for The Doors .
After Morrison's death
After the death of Jim Morrison on July 3, 1971 in Paris , the remaining band members released two albums, but they were not very successful. In April 1973 the band broke up. For a reunion concert, the three remaining Doors members came together again on September 26, 2000, together with several singers (such as Ian Astbury from the English rock band The Cult ) who took over Morrison's part. In November 2000 they played for VH-1 with Scott Weiland .
In 1993 the Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
The year 2003 brought movement in the band's history again. On November 6, 2002, Manzarek and Krieger announced that they would go on tour with Ian Astbury again in the US, although they had changed the band name to "The Doors of the 21st Century". John Densmore turned down a comeback. In 2004 a world tour followed. The background to the name change is a pending legal dispute in the USA, which was initiated by John Densmore and the parents of Jim Morrisons against the other two band members. Instead of John Densmore, Ty Dennis now played drums and, unlike before, the band performed with a bassist (Angelo Barbera). On July 22, 2005, the “Los Angeles Superior Court” banned Manzarek and Krieger from using the name “The Doors” and the Doors logo. In addition, the court ordered that Manzarek and Krieger have to surrender all profits from the "Doors of the 21st Century" to the original Doors partnership. Then the band appeared under the name " Riders on the Storm ".
Another lawsuit against the original members of the band was brought by the Police drummer Stewart Copeland , who was initially intended to be the drummer for the newly formed band. The lawsuit was dismissed.
On January 5, 2005, the manager of the "Doors of the 21st Century", Danny Sugerman, died .
In March 2007 Ian Astbury got out. For this, Brett Scallions was hired as a singer, who was formerly a singer in the group "Fuel".
On July 3, 2011 Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger went on a world tour again. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Jim Morrison's death, they began this in Paris in the Bataclan as "Ray and Robby of the Doors". They hired Dave Brock from the cover band "Wild Child" as singer . Angelo Barbera replaced them with bassist Phil Chen.
In 2011, Skrillex released the song Breakn 'a Sweat with The Doors, which was composed for the documentary Re: Generation .
In spring 2012, Robby Krieger reported in an interview as part of the promotion for the 40th Anniversary Edition of the album LA Woman to the musician magazine Guitar & Bass that there had been rehearsals with the long-time averse John Densmore.
Ray Manzarek died of cancer on May 20, 2013 at the age of 74.
Discography
Studio albums
The Doors
The group's debut album from January 1967 contains the world hit Light My Fire , the well-known love song The Crystal Ship and the song The End , which became famous again through the film Apocalypse Now and the original recording of which was partially censored on recordings because of its text . It is an intertextuality that refers to the Greek legendary figure Oedipus , a king's son who unknowingly kills his father, marries his mother and sleeps with her. The lines of text: "Father I want to kill you, Mother I want to fuck you" (German: father, I want to kill you, mother, I want to fuck you ) appeared to the public to be too vulgar, although the same scene had been in the same scene for thousands of years In theaters. The album also contains the Brecht / Weill song Alabama Song .
Strange days
The second album Strange Days was released in the fall of 1967 . The song Moonlight Drive is one of the older songs of the band, of which a recording already exists from 1966 when it was considered for the first album. The title of When the Music's Over was often played by the band as the opening act at concerts.
Waiting for the Sun
The album was released in 1968. With Hello, I Love You , the band posted a second number one hit on the US market. It also includes the well-known song Spanish Caravan .
The Soft Parade
The album was released in 1969 and was described by some critics as the weakest Doors album. The use of strings and brass sections and the associated stylistic change in the sound was criticized. With Running Blue is also the only song the Doors on the album, in which Robby Krieger took over the solo voice in the chorus.
Morrison Hotel
This album was released in February 1970 on the Elektra label. The recordings took place from September to December 1969 under the direction of producer Paul A. Rothchild , who had also produced all of the other studio albums. After the previous album The Soft Parade had not found the desired response from fans and critics, the group returned to the familiar sound on this album and also went towards the blues. Although the Morrison Hotel reached a slightly higher position in the US album charts than The Soft Parade (position 4 instead of 6, see below), it did not contain such a successful single as the top 3 hit Touch Me from its predecessor. All the lyrics on the album were written exclusively by Jim Morrison, and accordingly it has autobiographical traits.
LA Woman
The last Doors album before Jim Morrison's death was released in April 1971 and is considered the most bluesy of the Doors. The recordings for the album took place from November 1970 to January 1971; it was produced by the band itself and the sound engineer Bruce Botnick, as Paul A. Rothchild rejected further productions by the band.
"What you're doing is cocktail jazz, [...] I can't do that [...]"
Characteristic pieces of the album are the title song LA Woman , the lively Love Her Madly and Riders on the Storm . He denied the rumor that Rothchild is said to have called Riders on the Storm cocktail jazz and named Love Her Madly as the reason for his statement. It was a targeted provocation in the studio to tear the Doors out of their lethargy because they were completely uninterested and without energy during the rehearsals. Rothchild went with the advice that the Doors should produce the record themselves ("make the record yourself") in order to rediscover their old enthusiasm.

Filmography
In 1968, Paul Ferrara and the group A Feast of Friends made the first and only film the Doors have ever produced about themselves. According to the program information from Arte , on which the film was shown as The Doors - Feast of Friends on August 1, 2015, it has been completely restored on the basis of the negatives after it was long lost, with the colors corrected and cleaned and the Soundtrack was remixed and revised by longtime Doors companion Bruce Botnick. Before that, he could only be seen in special programs in smaller cinemas.
In 1991 the band's story was filmed by Oliver Stone under the title The Doors . On January 17th, 2009 director Tom DiCillo showed his Doors documentary When You're Strange for the first time at the Sundance Film Festival . The film was released in the US on April 9, 2010 and received a Grammy in 2011 in the category "Best Long Form Music Video".
