The Irish Recorded Music Association ( IRMA for short ) is the association of the Irish music industry. It is a non-profit organization that manages and controls this industry in Ireland .
Goals and Activities
- IRMA is committed to promoting and protecting the Irish music industry and its interests. In particular, it lobbies to represent its member companies and to take action against illegal music downloads. She not only supports local, but also international artists.
- The official Irish music charts are also recorded and published by the IRMA. These are divided into the categories Top 100 Albums , Top 100 Singles , Top 10 Classical Albums, Top 10 Dance Singles, Top 20 Multi-Artist Compilation Albums, Top 30 Videos, Top 20 DVDs and Top 10 Music DVDs.
- Only Irish companies can join the IRMA. All members pay an annual fee, which depends on the size of the company.
- Since April 12, 2005, the IRMA has been taking legal action against "serial filesharers " in Ireland who illegally publish or distribute music on the Internet. On November 15, 2005, "Phase II" of the fight against file sharing began.
- In the past, IRMA has organized The IRMA Honors , a music award in honor of the life's work of Irish musicians and personalities who have influenced the Irish music industry. The winners include Bob Geldof , Larry Gogan and Christy Moore .
- In the mid-1990s, IRMA presented the IRMA Music Awards , which were replaced in 2001 by the annual Meteor Ireland Music Awards .
Action against file sharing
The IRMA reached an agreement with Irish telecommunications company Eircom to use a third party to monitor Eircom users downloading pirated music . The " three strikes and you are out " system should be used in this system. However, the agreement met with criticism from Digital Rights Ireland and IrelandOffline.
The organization sent legal letters to various companies, including the web host Blacknight Solutions, whose managing director Michele Neylon published the letter on the company's website. Even though Blacknight Solutions is not an internet service provider, they then received a letter offering to negotiate an arrangement similar to that with Eircom.
Protests against the actions of the IRMA are organized by Digital Rights Ireland and Blackout Ireland.

The IRMA Foundation
In 1997, IRMA and Phonographic Performance (Ireland) Limited established a foundation with the aim of improving the opportunities for young people pursuing a career in the music industry. The most important initiative of the Foundation is the "Instrument Bank", which provides musical instruments to young people, some of whom live in disadvantaged communities in Ireland.
