November Rain (English for. " November Rain ") is a song by American hard rock band Guns N 'Roses , which on the album Use Your Illusion I is to be found (10th title of the album). The song was written by the singer and front man of the band Axl Rose . The song is a ballad of around nine minutes in length and thus joins the list of well-known epic ballads such as Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen . In the US, the single for the song was released in June 1992 instead of February.

music

The instrumental area has been elaborately designed using many synthesizers and keyboards . Most of the time you hear the piano and voice of Axl Rose and many long solos from Slash throughout the song . In addition, the song is accompanied by a background choir and a synthesizer orchestra. After about 7 minutes, the happy and cheerful mood changes into a rough guitar solo that lasts until the end.

text

The text shows that it is a love ballad. It is supposed to represent a declaration of love to a woman.

Beginning of the text:

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin 'when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same
But nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold november rain

German translation:

When I look in your eyes
Can I see a love held back
But darling when I hold
you tight don't you know I feel the same?
But nothing lasts forever
And we both know that feelings can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
in the cold November rain

Music video

The video, a mixture of an orchestral performance and the story Without You by Del James, was realized on a budget of 1.5 million dollars, making it one of the twenty most expensive music videos of all time. At the beginning you see Axl Rose going to bed and taking pills. Then there are sequences from the live performance that appear again and again in the video from now on. Then the story begins with the wedding of Axl Rose and his girlfriend at the time, Stephanie Seymour , at which the band is present as well as many guests.

Slash realizes he forgot the wedding rings, but Duff McKagan has thought of that and is bringing them back. Slash is the first to leave the fairytale-like wedding and plays his first solo in front of the church (which apparently stands in a steppe landscape). Finally, Rose and Seymour leave the wedding, after which Slash plays a solo again. The next scene shows the celebrations after the wedding, with toasts and dancing. Suddenly a heavy rain comes in and everyone tries to save themselves, with one person jumping through the wedding cake and everything ends in chaos.

Now comes the last change of scene. You see the same church again, but now only a priest, a few guests, the mourning rose and an open coffin in which Seymour is lying. In addition, there is the last guitar solo by Slash, to which he climbs on Rose's piano in the live sequences. After you see Rose sitting in front of the grave, devastated, there is a little outro. He wakes up and scenes of the wedding come to mind. Why Seymour died, however, remains unclear to many at the end of the video.

At the end of the long version of the video (9:16 minutes) there is a message that this video is based on the story Without You by the author Del James. This is about a rock star who mourns a partner who killed herself with a shot in the head after she caught him cheating. With more than 1.2 billion views, the video was one of the most viewed on the YouTube video portal in 2018 .
