Slash (musician)
Slash (born July 23, 1965 in Hampstead , London , England ; actually Saul Hudson ) is a British - American rock musician ( guitarist ). Slash was best known with the rock band Guns N 'Roses , in which he played guitar from 1985 to 1996. Since the Not-in-this-Lifetime- Reunion-Tour in 2016 he has been a permanent member of the band again as lead guitarist . During the 20 year absence from Guns N 'Roses, Hudson played guitar with Velvet Revolver and Slash's Snakepit . In 2010 he released his first solo album Slash , which was followed by Apocalyptic Love in 2012 , World on Fire in 2014 and Living the Dream in 2018 . The Rolling Stone listed him as 65th of the 100 best guitarists of all time .
Life
Saul Hudson grew up in England as the child of an African-American mother and an English father . Both parents worked in the entertainment industry: Hudson's mother, Ola Hudson, made costumes for artists like David Bowie , and his father designed album covers for musicians like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell . When Hudson was eleven, his parents separated and he moved to Los Angeles with his mother . He met many musicians and actors through his mother. The actor Seymour Cassel , whose children Hudson was friends, gave him the name "Slash" . Slash attended Beverly Hills Continuation High School along with other later artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Nicolas Cage .
As a teenager he rode BMX and won several smaller prizes in this discipline. At the age of 15 he got his first acoustic guitar , on which he quickly learned to play the guitar. The first musical influences came from guitarists such as Rory Gallagher , Van Halen , Eric Clapton , Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck , but also from rock bands such as Led Zeppelin , The Rolling Stones , Queen and Aerosmith . He began to devote all of his time to playing the guitar, which caused his academic performance to suffer. In the eleventh grade he dropped out of school and founded the first bands. As part of the Los Angeles music scene, Slash met drummer Steven Adler , with whom he formed the band "Road Crew". However, this only became known through their constant line-up changes, with Slash and Adler remaining the only constants.
After Slash and Adler received a demo tape by guitarist Izzy Stradlin , on which Axl Rose could also be heard as a singer, the musicians agreed to meet. Stradlin and Rose, for their part, had problems keeping the band Hollywood Rose together: guitarist Tracii Guns and drummer Rob Gardner saw themselves unable to give concerts with Hollywood Rose, whereupon Slash and Adler initially stepped in as temporary workers. After the first successful appearances, both bands merged to Guns N 'Roses ; Recordings and world tours followed. Guns N 'Roses became one of the most successful rock bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s . The tour to the double album Use Your Illusion was to date the longest tour a band had ever embarked on. Between the first gig in 1991 and the last one in October 1993, Guns N 'Roses gave over 300 concerts worldwide. After the world tour, Slash took on the US citizenship.
In 1996 Slash left Guns N 'Roses after tension in the band and especially around Axl Rose. Slash founded the band Slash's Snakepit back in 1994 , with whom he recorded two albums by the end of 2001. The contact with the other members of Guns N 'Roses never completely broke off at this time, which is why musicians like Duff McKagan ( bass ) and Matt Sorum (successor to Adler as drummer for Guns N' Roses) on the first record of Slash's Snakepit - It's Five O'Clock Somewhere - can be heard. Slash also founded the band Slash's Blues Ball, where he played old blues rock classics. The band gave a few concerts but did not record a record.
After a joint benefit concert in 2002, the ex-Guns-N'-Roses musicians Hudson, McKagan and Sorum founded the band together with the former singer of the Stone Temple Pilots , Scott Weiland , and the guitarist Dave Kushner (Ex- Suicidal Tendencies ) Velvet Revolver , in which Slash is still active today. In September 2005 the toy manufacturer McFarlane Toys brought out a realistic miniature sculpture of the musician.
In 2010 Slash played together with Tom Morello on Cypress Hill's new album Rise Up the songs Rise Up and Shut 'Em Down .
On July 10, 2012, Slash received a star in the music category on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . The eulogy was given by Charlie Sheen .
In 2016, Slash returned to Guns N 'Roses with bassist Duff McKagan.
Private life
Little is known about Slash's personal life. Slash was married to actress and model Renee Suran for five years. The two separated in 1997. Three years later he married Perla Ferrar, with whom he has two sons and who lived together until 2014. His autobiography Slash was published in November 2007 . In late 2014, tabloids announced Slash's marriage-off.
Today he lives with Meegan Hodges, with whom he was dating around 1990, near San Fernando , Los Angeles.
Equipment
Slash mainly plays Gibson brand Les Paul guitars . His intensive use of this model since the early days of Guns N 'Roses literally led to a boom in this model and laid the foundation for a close partnership with the company, which has dedicated several signature models to him to this day .
Slash is also known for his close association with the British amplifier manufacturer Marshall , who in 1996 became the first artist in the company's history to dedicate an amplifier series to him. In 2010 Marshall brought out another Slash Signature amplifier with the AFD100. The name AFD is composed of the initials of the first Guns N 'Roses album A (ppetite) F (or) D (estruction), for whose recordings Slash used a modified Marshall amplifier. Reproducing the sound of this amplifier was the reason the AFD100 was developed. Slash uses a wah-wah from Dunlop in his solos to this day . It is a modified pedal according to his ideas. Together with the manufacturer MXR, Slash developed the Octafuzz pedal, and with the pickup manufacturer Seymour Duncan, Slash developed pickups according to his ideas. Slash has also launched a digital version of its equipment with the software manufacturer IK Multimedia: Amplitube Slash.
Solo album
In April 2010 he released his first solo album called Slash , on which he played with many rock greats (including Duff McKagan , Lemmy Kilmister , Andrew Stockdale , Iggy Pop , Ozzy Osbourne , Kid Rock , Fergie , Myles Kennedy and Dave Grohl ) is heard. The album reached number 4 in the German charts. In 2012 the album Apocalyptic Love followed in which all vocal parts were sung by Myles Kennedy ( Alter Bridge ). The album reached number 5 in the German charts and number 4 in the USA. In 2014 Slash released the third solo album " World on Fire ". The singer was again Myles Kennedy, as on the album " Living the Dream " released in 2018 .
In 2011 Slash and Myles Kennedy released their first live album together, "Made in Stoke". In addition to songs from his solo record, it also included songs from the Snakepit albums, but also the Guns-N'-Roses songs Nightrain, Rocket Queen, Civil War, Patience, Sweet Child o 'mine, Mr Brownstone and Paradise City. With Slither there is also a song by Velvet Revolver. The concert was also released on DVD / BluRay. In 2015 Slash released the album "Live at the Roxy". This live recording was released as a double CD and as a DVD / BluRay. It contains songs from all three solo albums, but also Guns-N'-Roses songs and, with Slither, another song by Velvet Revolver
As a guest musician
In the video and computer game Guitar Hero III - Legends of Rock , Slash made a guest appearance as one of three boss opponents. A “battle” was composed and recorded by Slash for this purpose. He was also the model for many of the animations.
On February 6, 2011, Slash appeared with the Black Eyed Peas and Usher on the Super Bowl XLV halftime show .
In addition to his bands and solo projects, Slash has often worked as a guitarist for other artists in the past. These guest appearances include artists as diverse as Lenny Kravitz , Michael Jackson or Brian May . There were both guest appearances at concerts and as a guest musician for a music album.
