Rockstar 101 is a song by the Barbadian singer Rihanna . It was Rihanna, Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart wrote and is part of its fourth studio album Rated R . The song is a classic hip hop track but includes a guitar solo by Slash . The associated remixes, on the other hand, contain elements of dubstep and electronic dance music. Among others, Dave Audé and Mark Picchiotti were involved in them.

After its release on May 25, 2010, the song immediately reached number two on the US dance charts and number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 24 in Australia .

Background and publication

Rihanna co-wrote the song with Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. The recordings were made at Serenity Sound Studios in Los Angeles , California, the Boom Boom Room in Burbank , California and Triangle Sound Studios in Atlanta , Georgia . In addition to Nash and Stewart, Makeba Riddick was the producer , who mainly took care of the vocals. The song was mixed by Jaycen Joshua at Larrabee Studios in Universal City , California. The assistant was Giancarlo Lino. The sound engineers involved were Marcus Tovar, Brian "B-LUV" Thomas, Andrew Wuepper and Chris "TEK" O'Ryan. A guitar solo comes from the guitarist Slash.

Ryan Seacrest announced the release of the single after Rihanna first sang the song live on American Idol on April 7, 2010 . It is the fourth single from the album Rated R in the United States and the fifth single from the album worldwide. The single was released on May 18, 2010 as a download and was played on the radio for the first time on the same day. A week later, the EP Rockstar 101: The Remixes was released with twelve different versions of Rockstar 101 on Rihanna's label Def Jam Recordings .

Rihanna also featured the song on her Last Girl on Earth tour .

The song was used to advertise the upcoming Nikita and MTV Video Music Awards 2010 shows .

music

Musically, in contrast to her more R&B-oriented work on earlier albums, the song can be clearly assigned to hip-hop. In addition, the song with Slash's guitar solo contains a surprising hard rock and metal influence , which makes the song seem very aggressive. This fits well with the basic direction of the album. Controlled aggression is one of the main themes of the album there. In the song, she appears very confident and aggressive. Little was left of the warm-hearted, Caribbean flair of the previous albums. Music critics state that this aggressive approach, which is particularly noticeable in this song, was influenced by the attack of her ex-boyfriend Chris Browns . He had physically attacked the singer in February 2009 before the Academy Awards and was therefore charged with assault.

criticism

The song was received very mixed by the critics. Ann Powers wrote in the Los Angeles Times that Slash's performance was dispensable. Rihanna wouldn't need it, she could insist on the song alone. Jon Pareles of The New York Times praised the song's strong chords, much like Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly . Emily Tarantella of Popmatters praised the song as "brilliant showing off."

Music video

Rihanna sings "Rockstar 101" during her Last Girl on Earth tour in Antwerp , Belgium .

The music video for Rockstar 101 was shot in April 2010. Directed by Melina Matsoukas , who directed Rihanna's last music videos for Hard and Rude Boy . On May 19, 2010, a 30-second clip of the music video was posted online, along with a video that showed a behind-the-scenes look at the video shoot. The entire music video premiered on May 25, 2010 on the Vevo video website .

The music video is sexually charged and contains elements of the Gothic and BDSM scene, such as bondage , lacquer and leather. In addition, Rihanna appears as a rock star with a real band. In the music video, Rihanna shows herself in eight different scenes, her body is painted black with paint and in some scenes Rihanna shows herself completely naked and veiled with objects the view of intimate places. During these scenes, Rihanna is painted black. She also wears necklaces and a crown of thorns, both made by jewelry designer Fannie Schiavoni . In a scene in the forest, Rihanna imitates Slash with his classic long hair and sunglasses, the guitarist himself does not appear in the video. In further scenes, Rihanna plays a black electric guitar and later destroys it. Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker also makes a cameo as the drummer for Rihanna's rock band.

As inspiration for the music video, Rihanna names many rock musicians and rock bands, such as Nine Inch Nails and The Bravery . Shortly after the music video was released, Guns N 'Roses guitarist Slash said he was impressed with how Rihanna had imitated him. This would bring a sexual component to the video that he would not have been able to implement. The music video premiered on 4Music on UK television on June 13th.
