The song was released as the first single from Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, on March 29, 2007 and was a huge hit worldwide. The single was produced by Christopher Stewart. The piece is a pop song with influences from R&B , dance pop and hip hop .
In 2008 Umbrella earned Rihanna and Jay-Z a Grammy Award for Best Collaboration - Rap / Vocal and Nominations for Single of the Year and Song of the Year . The single was number one in the UK for 10 weeks . In the lyrics, Rihanna and Jay-Z communicate about bad weather and that they don't mind, because they understand each other and have a screen for negative events under which one can escape (chorus: Now that's raining more than ever, Know that we 'll still have each other, You can stand under my umbrella ... ).

The song reached the top ten in numerous national charts . On June 9, 2007, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 based on download numbers. The single became the highest debut since Nielsen SoundScan introduced the US download charts in 2003. Umbrella was Rihanna's second number one hit in the US since SOS (2006). and was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks. In the 2007 Billboard annual charts, the song was second behind Beyoncé's hit Irreplaceable .
The song reached number one on the UK charts only through downloads and became Rihanna's first number one hit in the UK. After ranked number one for nine weeks in a row, the song broke Gnarls Barkley's Crazy record as the longest-running number one hit of the decade in the UK. A week later, Umbrella was number one in the UK Top 40 for its tenth week , making it the longest-running number one hit of the millennium and 21st century in Britain. On December 12, 2008, the single went platinum in the UK . On May 21, 2007 Umbrella went straight to number 1 on the Danish hit lists and was able to maintain the top position for seven weeks. The song stayed in the charts for a total of 21 weeks and went platinum . In Ireland , the song rose to eighth place on May 17, 2007 in the GFK charts. A week later, Rihanna took first place and stayed there for seven more weeks. The title also reached number one in the charts in other European countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Because of Umbrella 's worldwide success , Def Jam produced five new versions of the song with Rihanna, which she sang at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards . In 2009 a cover version of the song by The Baseballs was released . Umbrella , including the music video, is included in the karaoke computer games SingStar Pop Volume 2 and Lips . A cover version of the song is included in the game Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2 . In the episode Substitute ( The Substitute ) of the second season of the television series Glee , the cast sang a mashup of Umbrella and Singin 'in the Rain by Gene Kelly with guest actress Gwyneth Paltrow .
