The Muñoz Gamero Peninsula ( Spanish Península Muñoz Gamero ) is a large peninsula in southern Chile . It belongs to the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena (Región XII), with the northern part falling into the Province of Última Esperanza and the southern part falling into the Province of Magallanes . The peninsula is named after Benjamín Muñoz Gamero (1817–1851), a Chilean military and politician.
geography
The Muñoz Gamero Peninsula is connected to the southwest of the Patagonian mainland in the east by an isthmus that is only 4 km wide (at 52 ° 30 ′ 21 ″ S , 72 ° 35 ′ 7 ″ W ) . In the southwest it borders on the Strait of Magellan , in the west on the Smyth Canal and southeast of it lies the island of Riesco , from which it is only separated by a very narrow strait . Until 1904 Riesco was still considered part of the peninsula. The peninsula itself is heavily furrowed by fjords and bays and is in turn divided into numerous peninsulas. The most striking elevation is the 1758 m high stratovolcano Monte Burney in the north of the peninsula. In the south is the 200 km² Gran Campo Nevado glacier field and in the center of the peninsula is a lake that was only discovered in 1945.
