The province of Última Esperanza ( German " Province of Last Hope " ) is a Chilean province in the north of the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena . It borders in the north on the Región de Aisén , in the east on Argentina and in the south on the province of Magallanes .
The province includes the Torres del Paine National Park , most of the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, the Alacalufes National Reserve and the Muñoz-Gamero Peninsula . It is named after the Seno Última Esperanza fjord of the same name .
The only urban settlement is Puerto Natales with 16,933 inhabitants. Other larger settlements are Villa Puerto Edén, Villa Dorotea (both Comuna Natales) and Cerro Castillo (Comuna Torres del Paine).
According to the results of the 2012 census, the province has 18,685 inhabitants, of which 9,570 men and 9,115 women, on an area of 55,443.8 km².
The province is divided into the two municipalities (Comunas)
- Natales , 48,974.2 km², 18,505 inhabitants and
- Torres del Paine , 6,469.7 km², 180 inhabitants.
