The province of Magallanes is a province of Chile within the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena . It is located south of the province of Última Esperanza and west of the province of Tierra del Fuego .

The province comprises the extreme south of the Chilean mainland with the Brunswick Peninsula and the area adjoining it to the north up to the Argentine border at the 52nd parallel, the islands of Dawson , Riesco , Santa Inés , Clarence, Desolación and other islands.

According to the results of the 2012 census , the province has 128,199 inhabitants and an area of ​​38,400.8 km², making it the most populous province in this region.

63,427 men and 64,772 women live in the province; 123,599 people live in the urban settlement of Punta Arenas itself, 4,600 in the countryside.

The capital and only urban settlement of the province is Punta Arenas on the Brunswick Peninsula . Other larger settlements are René Schneider, Puerto Harris (both Comuna Punta Arenas), Posesión Uno, Bernardo O'Higgins (both Comuna San Gregorio) and Villa Tehuelches (Comuna Laguna Blanca).
