The Dawson Island , and Dawson Island or Dawson Iceland , is a Chilean island one hundred kilometers south of Punta Arenas in the Magellan Strait between Patagonia Brunswick Peninsula and Tierra del Fuego . Administratively it belongs to the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena (Región XII).

Since the end of the 19th century, the 1290 km² large island of Dawson, exposed to the Roaring Fifties , was used as a prison island , initially for Selknam Indians with willful and involuntary assistance as well as against resistance from Salesians .

After the overthrow of Salvador Allende by Augusto Pinochet in the coup in Chile in 1973 , she was again used as a prison, this time for the opposition. One of the most prominent prisoners in the Pitroque concentration camp was Luis Corvalán 1973–1976 . Others in several torture sites were Julio Palestro Rojas, Tito Palestro Rojas, Clodomiro Almeyda , Arturo Jirón, Fernando Flores , José Tohá, Jaime Tohá, Osvaldo Puccio, Anselmo Sule, Sergio Bitar (who wrote his experiences as a prisoner in the book “Dawson. Isla 10 "Which was filmed in 2009 by Miguel Littín ), Aristóteles España, Sergio Vuskovic or Allende's Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier . After Corvalán's exchange in 1976, international pressure also resulted in the release and departure of the other political prisoners. The use of the camps was probably not significantly restricted until after the end of the dictatorship in 1989. For 2002, the Chilean statistical office gives 301 inhabitants.
