S&M is a song by the Barbadian singer Rihanna from her fifth studio album Loud . It was released on January 21, 2011 as the third single from the album. Musically, S&M is a Eurodance , Electropop and Dance Pop song.

S&M received mixed ratings from music critics . Like the predecessors Only Girl (In the World) and What's My Name? , S&M was again a worldwide success and so far reached the top ten of the charts in 12 countries, including Australia , where the song was number 1 on the Australian charts for 5 weeks . In New Zealand and Germany reached S & M 2nd place and in the UK the third place after the release of a remix of the song with Britney Spears as a guest singer reached S & M Place 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 . It is the 10th number for Rihanna and the 5th number 1 hit for Britney Spears. The song also reached number 1 in Canada . There it is the 5th number 1 single for both Rihanna and Spears, with which the two artists have the most number one hits in the history of the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 .

Before the album was released, S&M hit the Internet on November 5, 2010 with more songs from the album . During a radio interview on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show , Rihanna stated that her fans should vote on the next single, naming two songs, S&M and Cheers (Drink to That) . The fans chose S&M . Rihanna recorded a remix version of S&M with rapper J. Cole, which premiered online on January 17, 2011 and was broadcast on US radio stations on March 8, 2011. The normal version of S&M was broadcast on US radio stations on January 25, 2011.

In April 2011 Rihanna took the single S&M together with Britney Spears again. A radio interview with Rihanna took place on April 11, in which she confirmed that the new version would be released at 12:00 a.m. local time. A radio premiere of the version has already taken place. The versions differ in a new line and the parts that Spears sings. After the digital release of the remix, S&M quickly reached number 1 on the iTunes charts in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain and Portugal . On April 20, 2011, the US music magazine Billboard announced that the feature, combined with the original version, had sold 293,000 digital copies and thus reached number 1 in both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Digital Songs. S&M also climbed to number 1 on the Canadian Hot 100 and the Digital Songs charts in Canada .

S&M is a Eurodance title, produced by the Norwegians Stargate and the French Sandy Vee. The song also contains elements from electro-pop and dance-pop .

Washington Post's Chris Richards stated, "The bedroom fantasies are clearly tangible on S&M , with a Rihanna expressing her love of chains and whips in her best Lady Gaga pantomime." In an interview with Spin -Magazine, Rihanna explained, people shouldn't take the content that seriously: "I don't think my song is about a sexual nature, I think S&M is a metaphor ... it's supposed to make people think ... people start." Talking about you, you can't stop it. You just have to be the strong person and know who you are so that the song can be interpreted personally. And I thought S&M was my newest sassy bum for the industry. ” BBC Radio 1 has renamed S&M Come On due to the sexual innuendo in the title .

The line “Sticks and stones may break my bones” comes from a nursery rhyme that was first printed in 1894 in the British collection Folk Phrases of Four Countries . There it continues with the words “but names will never hurt me”, while Rihanna continues with “but chains and whips excite me”.

criticism

Allmusic's Andy Kellman praised S&M as one of the better dance-pop songs on the album, but also said it wasn't as good as Rude Boy (2009). Sal Cinquenmani from Slant Magazine and Thomas Conner of the Chicago Sun-Times quoted S & M as one of the songs from Loud , Rihanna, the darker side of Rated R Show. Cinquenmani described S&M as an allusion to sadomasochism "which has many similarities to Janet Jackson ". BBC Music's James Skinner criticized the use of "sadomasochistic" content in the song. Nadine Cheung from AOL Radio described the song as "sexy" and added, "With Rihanna's seductive charms, everyone will love the song."

Music video

Background and concept

The music video for S&M was shot on the weekend of January 15, 2011 in Los Angeles . Directed by Melina Matsoukas , who has already directed Rihanna's videos for Hard , Rude Boy and Rockstar 101 . Rihanna also helped direct the music video and devised the entire content of the music video. In an interview with The Juice , Matsoukas stated, "The content of the music video is inspired by Rihanna's sadomasochistic relationship with the global media ... it's not a bundle of whips and chains." She continued, "It's a nifty, colorful, pop and sexual video showing Rihanna at her hottest side as we know and love her. She loves the art of sexual music videos and takes inspiration from it and becomes even more successful. Sex Sells is Rihanna's capital and her success. ”The video is also based on the work of the photographers David LaChapelle and Philipp Paulus , who are known for working with unusual colors, humor and hypersexual art. On January 27, 2011, Rihanna published a 48-second excerpt from the “making-of” video for S&M on her personal YouTube page “Rihanna-Vevo” . On February 1, 2011, Rihanna released the complete music video for S&M on her "Rihanna-Vevo".

Plagiarism and process

Discussions about the music video continued when Rihanna was first accused of plagiarism. The music video is said to have been copied from photographs by Vogue Italia between 1995 and 2002, David LaChapelle and Philipp Paulus . Many critics compared Chapelle's and Paul's photographs with the images from the music video and immediately recognized a direct similarity. A few days after the initial settlements, LaChapelle sued Rihanna and Matsoukas. The music video is virtually identical to the set, scenarios, and styling of Chapelles and Paulus' photographs. Paulus' photographs had two direct matches with the Paperworld fashion series, which Vogue also reported on. LaChapelle sued Rihanna over eight of his images that she copied in the S&M music video .
