Toxic (. English for " Toxic ") is a song by American pop - singer Britney Spears from her fourth studio album In the Zone . The song was released on January 12, 2004 by Jive Records as the second single from the album. Toxic is a dance pop song with influences from electro pop and bhangra music. In terms of content, it is about becoming a slave to a lover. The song received positive reviews from critics and was named the best song on the album. Toxic achieved worldwide success among other things the top five position in 15 countries. In Australia , Canada , Hungary , Norway and Great Britain the single reached the top position. In the US, it became their first single, which has been in the top ten in four years.

Toxic was written and produced by Cathy Dennis , Henrik Jonback, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg and Bloodshy & Avant. The song was originally offered to Kylie Minogue for her 2003 album Body Language . She declined, however, and later commented, “I wasn't upset that the song brought her success. It's like the fish that got off the hook. I have to accept it. ” Toxic was recorded at Murlyn Studios in Stockholm . In December 2003 it was announced that after Me Against the Music either (I Got That) Boom Boom or Outrageous would originally be released as the second single from In the Zone , but Spears was personally committed to Toxic . The song was part of their Onyx Hotel Tour . In 2011 she sang the song during her Femme Fatale tour . It is also part of their current Las Vegas show Britney: Piece of Me .
Music video
The music video for Toxic shows Spears as a secret agent looking for a vial of green, toxic liquid. After stealing this, she enters the apartment of her unfaithful friend and poisons him. The video also includes scenes where Spears wears a see-through suit, some of which is set with diamonds. Spears sang Toxic in a number of live performances, including at the NRJ Music Awards in 2004. It was the opening number of her Onyx Hotel tour in 2004 and was also toured on The Circus Starring: Britney Spears (2009) and the Femme Fatale Tour (2011). Toxic has been covered by several artists. In 2005, Spears won her first Grammy Award in the "Best Dance Recording" category through Toxic .

Toxic debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 31, 2004 at number 53. On March 27, 2004, the song reached number nine. It was after Oops! ... I Did It Again from 2000, their fourth top ten hit in the US. On October 25, 2004, Toxic was awarded gold with 500,000 copies sold. Toxic was legally downloaded 1,537,000 times, making it the sixth best-selling digital single in the country. Toxic also topped the Canadian charts. On March 15, 2004 the song debuted at the top position on the Australian charts and held that position for two weeks. The song received gold certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for over 35,000 units sold. By March 2013, the song sold a total of 1.9 million times in the US , according to Billboard .
