If U Seek Amy (English for: " If you seek Amy ") is a song by American pop - singer Britney Spears from her album Circus , which by Max Martin produced.

background

Contrary to much speculation in the media that either Out from Under or Unusual You and thus a ballad would be chosen for the third single from Circus , the choice fell on the beat- heavy pop song If U Seek Amy . This was announced on January 7, 2009 on Spears' official website.

The song was produced and written by Max Martin, who was responsible for Spears' debut and breakthrough ... Baby One More Time , but also for many other commercially successful songs at the beginning of the singer's career. Even before the circus album If U Seek was released , Martin described Amy as his best work ever.

In the chorus of the single Spears sings: " [...] love me, hate me, [...] all of the boys and all of the girls are beginning to if you seek Amy " which doesn't seem to make sense at first. In the song, however, “If you seek Amy” is sung so quickly and without a break between the individual words that this passage sounds like “ FUCK Me”. By critics, who were aware of this even before the album was released, the single became a topic of conversation. With the announcement of the third single release and thus automatic radio release, moderators, journalists, parents and lawyers from the USA spoke up, according to which radio release in the same country should be prohibited. The song was "dangerous to the public" and would endanger the youth. In the end it was decided to play the song as If U See Amy on the radio.

reception

When the album was released at the beginning of December, If U Seek Amy was able to reach number 86 on the US Billboard Hot 100 thanks to the high number of downloads.

With increasing download sales and airplay numbers, the single climbed to 19th place on the US Billboard charts and achieved gold status for over 700,000 copies sold . To date, the single has been certified platinum in the United States and has sold more than a million times. In Great Britain the single could reach number 20 in the charts.

If You Seek Amy reached number 1 in the singles charts in Brazil , Georgia and Singapore .
