Born to Make You Happy was written by Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin and produced by the latter. The song was composed in D minor and contains 88 beats per minute . Spears sings the song between 3 and 4 octaves. It's a ballad , Spears sings about their last relationship . She was betrayed by her boyfriend and came to the decision she was "born to make you happy" .

A "demo" version of the song was also released with the single, entitled Bonus Remix . The Bonus Remix is ​​an acoustic version of the song, this version was recorded in March 1998, but the official single was not recorded until the end of 1998.
