Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know was written and produced by Robert Lange, his then-wife Shania Twain, and Keith Scott. Spears recorded the vocals for the song between November and December 1999 in Lange's and Twain's castles in Switzerland . At a live concert in Hawaii , Spears named the song as one of her favorites from Oops! ... I did it again . The song was released on January 17, 2001 as the last single from the album. It was the first of Spears' singles to make it into the top 10 of the German and British music charts .

The pop ballad, written in E major, usually received good reviews, but it was found to be somewhat similar to David Bowie's and Iggy Pop's single China Girl .
