Femme Fatale (French for: fateful woman ) is the seventh studio album by the American singer Britney Spears . It was released in Germany on March 25, 2011.

With Femme Fatale , Spears broke records in the US, as she is the first and only artist who ever made it to debut with six albums at number 1 and with seven albums at least at number 2. Furthermore, she is the artist with the most number 1 albums in this millennium.

The album reached the top ten in 28 countries, including number 1 in the USA, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Russia and the international charts in South Korea, so the album was able to seamlessly build on the success of Circus .

The first single Hold It Against Me reached number 1 in seven countries, including the United States and Canada, where it was their fourth number-1 each. The song also made it into the top ten in eleven other countries. In the US, Spears debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 , which she previously achieved at the age of 3 , and made her only the second artist to have more than one debut at number 1. So far, the song has sold 1.2 million times in America, 411,000 of them in its debut week alone, and has thus achieved platinum status.

The second single Till the World Ends debuted at number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 9 the following week. After the release of The Femme fatale remix , in which Nicki Minaj and Kesha were also involved as guest singers, the song rose to number 3 on the US charts. The song became her tenth top 10 hit and has sold more than 1.6 million copies so far, which means platinum status. In contrast to Spears' previous singles, Till the World Ends enjoyed great longevity in the charts. The song was also placed in the top 10 in 15 countries, including a. 2nd in Norway and Russia.

I Wanna Go debutedat number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 60 on the Canadian Hot 100 the week after Femme Fatale was released thanks to high download sales . On May 13, 2011 it was officially announced that the song will be released as the third single. After the radio premiere and the release of the music video, the song rose to 7th and 6th place respectively in the USA and Canada. a. Australia and New Zealand, the song was in the top 40. It is also Spears' most successful radio hit in the US to date, with an audience of around 100 million.

After the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28, 2011, Spears announced in an MTV interview that Criminal would be released as the fourth single from Femme Fatale . The song was released as a download on iTunes on September 30, 2011, and the song's official US radio premiere took place on October 11, 2011.

The combined sales of the album, the three singles released so far and the digital sales of the album songs in the US is 5 million copies.

Background and content

Spears sings S&M on their 2011 Femme Fatale Tour .

In July 2009, during her tour for the album Circus , Spears started recording her next album. Nevertheless, the work on the seventh studio album was not officially confirmed until March 2010. During an interview with Rap-Up in June 2010, Danja commented that he was working with Spears on the preproduction of Femme Fatale . Darkchild, who allegedly appeared to be working with her as well, commented on an imminent release of new music during an Ustream session in August 2010. Spears' manager Adam Leber, however, declined to publish it quickly at the time. He also denied the collaboration of producers who let the latter announce through their Twitter account. Furthermore, Leber announced through Entertainment Weekly that the new album was more progressive and a departure from what had been heard so far. In November 2010, Dr. Luke, along with Max Martin, is announced as Executive Producer of the album.

On December 2, 2010, the singer's 29th birthday, Spears personally revealed the release of her new album in March 2011 via Twitter .

Before the album was even released, the respective producers published various previews of songs that will appear on Femme Fatale . So presented u. a. Dr. Luke samples of the songs I Wanna Go and Inside Out as well as will.i.am a 30-second preview of the track Big Fat Bass . After the tracks I Wanna Go , Inside Out and (Drop Dead) Beautiful first appeared in full on the Internet on March 11, 2011, the entire album was leaked a short time later. The planned second single, Till the World Ends , which was scheduled to be released on March 11, 2011, was already available for download worldwide on March 4, 2011 via iTunes .
