Kesha
Kesha [ kɛʃɐ ] (born March 1, 1987 in Los Angeles , California ; real name: Kesha Rose Sebert ), formerly stylized as Ke $ ha , is an American pop singer , rapper and songwriter . Although she has been in the music business since 2005, she didn't become known until 2009 when she was part of Flo Rida's Right Round . Her international breakthrough came about a year later with her own hit Tik Tok . The single reached number one on the music charts in eleven countries in the summer of 2010 . Kesha's debut album Animal was released in January 2010 and reached two million units worldwide in September. Their music combines elements of dance and electro pop with the typical spoken word of rap songs . Her fourth studio album, High Road , was released on January 31, 2020 .
Life
Childhood and family
Kesha Rose Sebert was born in Los Angeles in 1987 and grew up without a father. Her mother, Pebe Sebert, wrote lyrics for pop rock and country songs and raised both Kesha and her older brother Lagan under difficult financial circumstances. Often the family was dependent on welfare benefits and food stamps . In 1991, Pebe Sebert and her two children moved to Nashville , Tennessee , where she found new work. A short time later, Kesha's second brother Louis was born there. Since Pebe Sebert could not give up her work as a musician, she was often forced to take her three children with her to the recording studio or backstage. As a result, Kesha developed a close bond with music at an early age. Her mother encouraged her to sing and let her go to a local music school to learn how to song. During the time in Nashville, the Seberts appeared as a host family for the American show The Simple Life for one episode .
Although Kesha was enrolled in an international college program and was supposed to be studying psychology at Columbia University , she dropped out of school at the age of 17 in order to devote more time to her career. Pebe Sebert tried to develop her daughter's talent through various professional contacts. Finally, the producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin were impressed by Kesha's demo recording and convinced her to move back to Los Angeles. Dr. Luke then signed her to his music label at the age of 18 .
Career
Under Dr. Luke's record label sang Kesha early in her career as a background singer for Paris Hilton . After Dr. Luke was distracted by other projects, Kesha signed with David Sonenberg for DAS Communications Inc. in 2006. Kesha appeared on Katy Perry's video for her single I Kissed a Girl and in 2008 sang in the background with Britney Spears . The promised big record deal and the success associated with it did not materialize. The label Warner Bros. Records got in touch with DAS Communications Inc. and showed interest in Kesha, which however still through her contract with Dr. Luke was bound. Shortly thereafter, she quit DAS Communications Inc. and returned to Dr. Luke back. He was busy recording studio recordings with Flo Rida and was looking for a female voice for his new song Right Round . Dr. Luke suggested Kesha, who immediately accepted the offer. She is not in the video, nor does her name appear on the hit single, for which she was also not paid. Nevertheless, Dr. Luke's influence in early 2009 at RCA Records at Kesha and offered her a record deal for several albums.
TiK ToK wrote and produced it together with Benny Blanco and Dr. Hatch. The song was first offered for free download on Myspace and was released on iTunes as Kesha's debut single in August 2009 . It was only accessible to radio stations two months later. TiK ToK became a commercial breakthrough for Kesha. The single was number 1 in the charts in eleven countries, and in October 2010 it was five times platinum for 5 million downloads in the US . In the last week of December 2010, TiK ToK was downloaded more than 610,000 times, breaking the record for weekly downloads by female artists in the USA. This success was only trumped by Right Round .
Kesha's album Animal was released in January 2010 and reached # 1 in the US as a new entry. Critics described the album as "disgusting, suggestive and outrageously memorable". Blah Blah Blah , Your Love Is My Drug and Take It Off were later also released as singles from Animal and achieved similar success. Kesha also appeared on two top ten singles by Taio Cruz and 3OH! 3 in May 2010 . On June 16, 2010, Kesha held a benefit concert in support of the people in her hometown of Nashville who fell victim to the Tennessee floods in May 2010. In total, she made nearly $ 70,000 . She was also at Rihanna's performances of her Last Girl on Earth Tour in North America as opening act to see.
On November 22, 2010, Animal was re-released with the companion EP Cannibal . There were eight new songs on it, including We R Who We R , which entered the singles charts at number 1 in the USA, but only at number 23, 24 and 21 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Cannibal itself has only been listed in the American and Canadian charts until now (as of January 2011). In the same month it was announced that Kesha was preparing for her first tour in spring 2011. The Get Sleazy Tour is said to include performances in North America and Australia.
2011
Kesha appeared as a star guest in the first episode of the 6th season of Germany's Next Topmodel . In March she reached number 7 in the USA with Blow , the second single from Cannibal , and was also number 9 in the US as a songwriter with Till the World Ends by Britney Spears . On March 18, the remix album I Am the Dance Commander + I Command You to Dance: The Remix Album was released. In April, Kesha worked with Nicki Minaj on a remix of Spears' single Till the World Ends as a guest singer, which reached number 3 on the American charts. In mid-April, she received a guest role on American television on the teen sitcom Victorious , in which she played herself. Also in 2011, Kesha produced a two-minute music video together with the Funny or Die website in which she parodies some well-known Disney fairy tales . Kesha shows herself as "Princess Ke $ ha", who by no means wants to be a good, singing girl.
2012-2016
Kesha finishes work on the new album Warrior . The first single Die Young was released on September 25, 2012. The album was released on December 4th in America, the day before in Great Britain and on November 30th in Germany. At the EMAs 2012 she was nominated in the Best World Stage category. There was also an EP Deconstructed from the studio album Warrior .
The second single from the studio album Warrior is C'Mon , it was released in January 2013. Kesha presented this single on December 6th, 2012 on The X Factor (United States) .
In 2014 she was treated for bulimia and sued her longtime producer for harassment. "Dr. Luke “responded to the allegations with a counterclaim of defamation. In 2016, she withdrew her lawsuit in a California court. On April 29, 2016 , her comeback single True Colors was released in cooperation with the German - Russian DJ Zedd .
Since 2017
On July 5, 2017, Kesha announced through a video on her Instagram page that her first single, Praying , since the release of Warrior , would be released the next day. The music video was also released on July 6, 2017. Kesha's single Woman and the accompanying video were released on July 13, 2017, Learn to Let Go on July 27, 2017 and Hymn on August 3, 2017. Kesha's third studio album, Rainbow , was released on August 11, 2017 . A world tour followed later with the Rainbow Tour .
Since 2020
Their fourth studio album, High Road, was released on January 31, 2020.
Music genre
Kesha says on her website that when she was a child in Nashville, she adored country musicians Johnny Cash , Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline . Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan was her favorite record. For Animal , she is said to have been inspired by the young Madonna , Talking Heads and the Beastie Boys . RCA describes the album as a "collection of wild, energetic electro pop songs [...] made even more irresistible by the massive punk energy and Ke $ ha's irreverent lyrics and attitude." Kesha takes her lyrics from her real life and often describes things that she really experienced. There are songs that tell of nights out ( TiK ToK , Party At A Rich Dude's House ), of sneaky friends (Backstabber) , love ( Your Love Is My Drug , Stephen ) to grief and heartbreak ( Blind , Dancing With Tears In My Eyes ). Kesha herself says about her music:
“I want my music to be funny, uncompromising, aggressive, ornate, humorous and interesting. But there is substance behind it. Under my shell I am an emotional person. I want to give people something to hear with which they can identify. "
In many of her songs she uses a sing-sang-rap during the verses. However, she has been criticized for overusing automatic pitch correction and vocoders because they distort her voice too much. Billboard complained that it was difficult to tell if Kesha could actually sing. Fortunately, however, the choruses have such a catchy tune that they make up for it. Kesha has also voiced her frustration at the way women are reified in the music scene, but especially in the rap scene. So try to sing about the male gender in songs like Blah, Blah, Blah and Boots and Boys , as is commonly done with women.
Public appearance
Kesha said this about her trademark, the dollar sign ( $ ), in her name:
“[The] reason I have (the dollar sign), [is] 'cause it's ironic. Like, I don't care. I was so happy being broke. And I'm happy not being broke. It doesn't really affect me either way. I care about taking care of people that have taken care of me - that's important to me. But to be honest, I'm kind of repulsed by the gluttony and excesses of a lot of people in the limelight. "
“The reason I have the dollar sign is because it's ironic . I don't care. I was happy when I went broke. And I'm happy not to be broke. It doesn't affect me either. I care about being there for people who have helped me - that is important to me. But to be honest, I'm pretty disgusted by the excesses and excesses of many people who are in the spotlight. "
Kesha's outfit consists of wild, untidy hair and an eccentric wardrobe, which she herself describes as "garbage chic" (German: "garbage chic"). The stage makeup is mostly flashy with heavily made-up eyes and body glitter. She has six tattoos : a skull , an anchor and a simple cross are on the inner wrist of her right hand. She is said to have had the anchor set in Cuba . There is a dollar sign on the back of the hand between the thumb and forefinger. The word “YEAH!” Should be on the back of her foot. On the inside of her lower lip are the words "Suck it!" [German: licks me! ].
