Cannibal is the first EP of American pop - singer and rapper Kesha . It was released on November 22nd, 2010 in the USA on its label RCA Records and Sony, both as a standalone record and as an extension of the debut album Animal .
Originally Cannibal was only supposed to be released as a deluxe version of Animal , but due to the success of Animal and their single releases, it was decided to record a new EP and release it separately. The EP contains nine songs. Kesha worked with various music producers and songwriters , for example Dr. Luke , Benny Blanco, Ammo, Max Martin and Bangladesh.
background
To Cannibal Kesha told in an interview:
“This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. [...] My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It's the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don't like it - bite me ”
“This year was tough and changed my life. (…) The only goal of this album is to make my fans dance. The songs on Cannibal were written to inspire people to ignore hate or prejudice and be themselves without apologizing. It's the perfect addition to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don't like it - lick me! "
The EP was released in September 2010 at Conway Studios with Dr. Luke recorded. As with her debut album, Kesha worked with the same producers and songwriters: Dr. Luke , Ammo, Benny Blanco and Max Martin . Bangladesh is the only new producer of cannibal . Kesha said she wanted to release "good, positive and danceable music" with the album that everyone likes. Kesha stated: “I feel like I'm creating this hopefully very youthful and irreverent movement of the kids, of like adolescence. I feel like the parents don't get it, but the kids get it. And they deserve to have more good, positive music ”.
Singles
We R Who We R was officially released on October 25, 2010 as the first single from the EP. The song was featured on Kesha's official website on October 14, 2010.
With We R Who We R , Kesha wants to show how much fun you can have dancing at night. Above all, however, she wanted to convey something to people with her music. In the chorus she sings: "Tonight we are going to do it / as if the world is ours / we are tearing it apart You know that we are superstars / we are what we are."
Kesha stated that the teenage suicides in the United States had some impact on the genesis of the song. In particular, the case of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, who took his own life after being outed as homosexual by his roommate at university against his will , had a major impact on the song. Kesha felt a strong connection to the public hatred that she felt for being different. However, the problems and adversities she had to solve are nothing compared to what the teenagers had to go through.
review
The German online magazine laut.de clearly criticized the EP. The EP is referred to as the debut album committee and the artist's management is accused of selling out. The editor Karim Chughtai describes the EP in his review as “cheek”, “grotty”, “overproduced”, “predictable”, “pathetic”, “hollow” or even “loveless”. It would "bluntly and shamelessly shit on the inclined fan".
