(2011)

The Last Girl on Earth Tour was the third worldwide tour of the Barbadian singer Rihanna , which took place in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

The tour supported their fourth studio album, Rated R, and was announced by MTV News in December 2009. Pixie Lott , Tinchy Stryder and Tinie Tempah opened up for the European concerts, Kesha and Travie McCoy during the North American concerts.

background

Rihanna sings Hard wearing her Mickey Mouse helmet.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight , Rihanna explained the tour title: “I think about myself as 'The Last Girl on Earth' because sometimes people make decisions about other people’s views and, you know, my life is my life. It's my world And I ... live as I want. "In an interview with MTV, she explained:" We come up with different ideas and cool things. We want to do things we have never dared to do before ”and“ There are some sexy surprises waiting for you when I come to the UK ”.

The tour was officially announced on December 9, 2009, while the Hard music video was being made . In addition, a few dates for the European stages were announced on the official website. Pixie Lott was selected as opening act for the UK concerts along with last minute additions from Tinchy Stryder and Tinie Tempah .

While rehearsing for the tour, Rihanna also took drum lessons from Travis Barker . She later used what she had learned for the cover version of the song The Glamorous Life (originally by Sheila E ). In April 2010, the North American dates for the tour were announced. Although the rapper Nicki Minaj was originally planned as the opening act, she preferred to work on her debut album.

In March 2010, Israeli newspapers reported that Rihanna would perform at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv on May 30, 2010. The concert was sponsored by Orange RockCorps . This organization enables those who volunteer in their community for at least four hours to attend the concert free of charge. Rihanna later announced that she would join the volunteers before the concert to do local work in the community.

development

Rihanna sings Don't Stop the Music .

In an interview with AOL, Rihanna said that fans should have a lot of expectation compared to her previous tours. She commented: “We have never had a tour with this capacity. The production is unbelievable ... visually and sonically it is a big step compared to the last time. We'll keep growing and this time it's a massive production that I can't wait to see. "

The tour was hosted by Jamie King, who previously worked with Madonna , Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne . Tina Landon, who has worked with Janet Jackson , was employed as a choreographer. The creative director for the tour was Simon Henwood, who is also the creative director of their Rated R album . Henwood explained, “We spoke at length for months before the album was released, looking at every aspect of the campaign - from the styling, the ideas, the stage and the visuals […]. It's a great story that will unfold through the campaign and will eventually show up on the tour. Partly through the film The Omega Man ... "

The guitarist Nuno Bettencourt was responsible for leading the band.

Incidents

On April 19, 2010, Rihanna hit the headlines when she was hospitalized with an injured rib after her performance in Zurich . Alenka Ambroz, Head of the Corporate Communications Clinic, said: “Rihanna came to us at the hospital after the accident. We won't give any further details. ”However, Rihanna was still able to perform at the next show on April 20th in Lyon , France .

Outfits

Although some outfits were changed throughout the tour, these costumes were worn for most of the performances in Europe / Asia and North America :

Rihanna sings Umbrella in Zurich .
  • The first of the seven outfits is a long black dress that covers most of the body with red LED lights. This dress was created by Alexandre Vauthier, Moritz Waldemeyer, Tom Bennelick and Christophe Arnaudin.
  • The second outfit is called a nude body because of his pink skin color. It's a pink leotard and strap with shoulder pads decorated with Swarovski crystals. In addition to this outfit, a pair of black boots designed by Stuart Weitzman. This dress was created by Michael Schmidt, Erin Hirsh and Mariel Hänni.
  • The third outfit is a black latex body with large diamond shoulder pads extending from the left shoulder over the chest to the right shoulder. A large black cape is given from the pads to the floor. Under the outfit, Rihanna wears a skin-colored suit that at first glance looks like she is half-naked. This outfit was created by Rihanna's own team of stylists Mariel Hänni and Robert Zangardi.
  • The fourth outfit can be described as a theater stage dress . So it's easy because the dress is worn during the theater set of the concert and that's why it was named that way. The outfit is a black suit. The left half is covered by a black coat and the shoulder is covered by a flower shoulder pad made of long black, glittering material on the right shoulder. This dress was created once again by her stylists Mariel Hänni and Robert Zangardi.
  • The fifth outfit consists of a skin colored full body suit with white stripes that look like tapes and go around the whole body. The left leg is bald, but the right continues this pattern up to her high heels which have the same pattern. There is also a 3D shoulder pad that is made from the same tape pattern from shoulder to elbow. This outfit was created by Mariel Hänni and Robert Zangardi.
  • The sixth outfit is a simple black bra and black leggings . The bra is stretched around the body and attached to the leggings with two pieces of Velcro. The outfit is finished with black ten centimeter high heels and black leather gloves that close just behind the elbows. This was created by Mariel Hänni and Robert Zangardi.
  • The seventh and final outfit, referred to as an encore outfit , is a coat that is worn over the bra and leggings. It is a white leather dress that has neon lights in the large shoulder pads and skirt. The dress changes shape during the performance. A cord is used to manually open two air cushions under the shoulder pads. They wear the colors black and white striped. This dress was created by Mariel Hänni and Robert Zangardi.

Australia stage

The Australian leg of the Last Girl on Earth Tour kicked off on February 25, 2011. Some changes were made to this part of the tour. The setlist was changed and more songs from Rihanna's fifth studio album Loud were added. The songs were S&M , What's My Name? , Only Girl (In the World) and Love the Way You Lie (Part II) . Instead, the songs Russian Roulette , Rehab and Stupid in Love were removed from the original setlist. The stage was the same with the usual catwalk. But the circle at the end of the catwalk was smaller. The intro was still Mad House as the video opener, but this time Rihanna started with the dance song Only Girl instead of Russian Roulette . The Brisbane kick-off was told of a "full house" and according to the show's sources it was "absolutely stunning with excellent performances and visual effects."

criticism

Rihanna sings her song Rockstar 101 .
  • The Telegraph wrote: “On the opening night of the UK part of their world tour ... she started the murderous pop-rock ballad Russian Roulette. Accompanied by burning, naked mannequins on the screen. On the second song, she shed most of her clothes and danced on the gun barrel of a life-size pink tank while a half-naked military dance troupe whirled their rifles around. Sex, violence and pyrotechnics (including the large-screen mushroom cloud that accompanied the arsonists to Fire Bomb) were the themes of the evening. [...] Rihanna delivered an evening full of hits ... The show also scored points with its revealing costumes, lewd dance interludes, eye-catching props and sci-fi screens. […] Your young, predominantly female fans love Rihanna and were full of energy. The chance to combine sex and violence could be enough for effective 21st century blockbuster entertainment. "
  • BBC Radio 1 said: “The 22-year-old wore a floor-length black dress with red flashing lights at the start of the show in the UK capital in the 02 arena, starting with last year's single Russian Roulette. […] Most of the viewers appeared to be impressed by the show. […] The concert ended with the star's biggest hit, Umbrella . The number was able to stay at the top of the British single charts for 10 weeks in 2007. "
  • The Mirror wrote: “At the start of the Last Girl on Earth Tour, with the theme of portraying Rihanna as the last person, she threw herself into a fiery Russian Roulette performance. [...] There was no expression on her face. She is ready to play her game and fight. "
  • Rolling Stone's Mikael Wood attended the concert in Los Angeles and said Rihanna is getting the audience's attention. In an almost two-hour concert full of costume changes, video bits and complicated props […].
  • Black Entertainment Television's Clay Clane said of the show, “There may be doubts, but Rihanna proved she has the star power to run a show for nearly two hours. [...] Rihanna can sing and there was no sign of playback. Rihanna never said she was Whitney Houston, and even though she doesn't have a massive vocal range, she uses her voice to sound good, as her recordings show, and blurts out a few notes I've never heard from her before. "
  • The New York Post said: “Rihanna is a dream woman who turned the concert into a lively fireworks display, an arsenal of weapon props and a program that together mixes up the bubbly dance world of pop and rock. The harder taste from their latest album Rated R is represented. The opening song was the ballad Russian Roulette. The last song was her mega hit, Umbrella. Rihanna was electrifying with a performance that was presented very aggressively. "
