Love the Way You Lie (Part II) is a song from the Barbados derived R & B singer Rihanna from their fifth album Loud . The song was in cooperation with the US - Rapper Eminem added. It is the sequel to the worldwide hit Love the Way You Lie from 2010, which is on Eminem's seventh studio album Recovery .

background

Eminem and Rihanna recorded an alternate version of Love the Way You Lie in 2010 , this time with Rihanna as the lead singer. In the song, the story of the predecessor is told from a female perspective. Rihanna said in an interview with MTV.com that she initially opposed a sequel because she thought the original could never be trumped. When she heard the demo version recorded by Skylar Gray , however, she was ready to record the sequel. In the same interview she also said that the second part cost less effort than the first part, since the two singers are only accompanied by piano and drums.

Alternative versions

A piano version that excludes Eminem's part of the song is offered on iTunes as a bonus track from Loud .

The original demo version of Gray was released on their EP The Buried Sessions of Skylar Gray and the iTunes store version of their album Don't Look Down .

Critical reception

Jon Pareles of The New York Times said the song was purely theatrical but also just "raw" for a moment. Chris Richards of the Washington Post said that Rihanna could prevail against Eminem in Love the Way You Lie (Part II) and that she really shows what she can do. Emily Mackay from the NME commented that the contrast between Rihanna, who sang rather ballad, and Eminem, who literally screamed with anger, was just great.

BBC Online's James Skinner rated Love the Way You Lie (Part II) better than the original. He said that mainly Rihanna made up a large part of the song. In contrast to the first part, she is the main actor. USA Today's Steve Jones commented that the song wasn't going to match the original version. Thomas Conner of the Chicago Sun-Times thought the song was an unnecessary sequel.

Rihanna and Eminem also sang the song at the 2011 Grammy Awards as part of a medley with Eminem's I Need a Doctor , Dr. Dre , Adam Levine and Skylar Gray .
