The Warning is a song by the American rapper Eminem , written by Dr. Dre was produced and released on July 30, 2009. The disstrack is directed against the singer Mariah Carey and is part of a long-running feud between the two artists.

background

Since 2001, Eminem has claimed to have dated Mariah Carey for a period of six months. During this time Carey had a severe crisis, including a nervous breakdown at the time . Carey, however, always denied this. She only met him a few times and most of the time it would have been business. Eminem then mentioned them in a few songs. Carey responded with the track Clown on the Charmbracelet album . On his Anger Management Tour, Eminem presented voice mails intended to support his claims. On his album Relapse , he finally released a track called Bagpipes from Baghdad , which can be interpreted to mean that Eminem is still in love with Carey. Carey's husband Nick Cannon responded to the song with a lengthy statement on his website in which he challenged Eminem to a fight. Eminem took this athletically.

Finally, on June 16, 2009, the song Obsessed was released , which can be seen as a response to Eminem's sustained mentions. Eminem finally responded to this song on July 30, 2009 with The Warning .

Music style and content

The song was written by Dr. Dre produces and is kept in mid-tempo . The beat consists almost exclusively of a constant drum beat and keyboard sounds in the background, which are supposed to be reminiscent of a love song. The song has no chorus.

The text is about Eminem's brief relationship with Carey and the controversy that followed. In the song, he threatens Carey and her husband with the publication of more voicemails and clear pictures. He also claims to have had sex with Carey. But since he came too early, he ejaculated on her stomach . In addition, he describes Mariah Carey several times in the text as an alcoholic and makes fun of the star's later career. At the end there are a few lines in which a female voice was cut into the song, which is supposed to represent Mariah Carey. It remains unclear whether this was extracted from the alleged Voicemails or is simply recreated. In these lines of text Mariah Carey refers to herself as Mary Poppins .

answer

Carey didn't respond to the disstrack, but her husband released the song I'm a Slick Rick in September 2010 , in which he replied to Eminem's track, imitating British rapper Slick Rick . He also challenged Eminem to a boxing match, the proceeds of which were to be donated to charity. However, this never took place.

reception

Rolling Stone's Daniel Kreps saw The Warning as a track that got more to the point than many of the songs from Eminem's last album Relapse , but Entertainment Weekly's Simon Vozick-Levinson thought that there was only one line against Nick Cannon and that Rest was very predictable.

Charts

The song did not reach the Billboard Hot 100 , but was placed on three Billboard special charts.
