from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jann S. Wenner (born January 7, 1946 in New York City ) is a journalist, publicist and owner of Wenner Media. He was best known as the founder and editor-in-chief of the legendary music magazine Rolling Stone .

After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley , Wenner founded the rock music magazine Rolling Stone in 1967 in San Francisco with music journalist Ralph Gleason . It was the first nationally available magazine in the USA to deal exclusively with the subject of rock music, which quickly made it known among rock music consumers of the time. In the early years Wenner himself conducted a series of interviews with music stars of the time such as Mick Jagger , Eric Clapton , Bob Dylan , Pete Townshend and Phil Spector . When Rolling Stone ran into financial trouble in late 1970 , it was an interview by Wenner with John Lennon and Yoko Ono that kept the magazine from running out.

In the course of the 1970s, Wenner began to be less and less interested in the new rock music and wrote very few articles himself. After the magazine moved to New York, it also moved closer to the mainstream. In the 1980s and 1990s it still had high circulation, but it was no longer as influential as it was before.

In addition to his work for Rolling Stone , Wenner produced Boz Scaggs ' debut album in 1969 and was involved as an actor in the film Perfect with John Travolta in 1985 . In 1986 he was one of the founders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , where he was honored for his life's work in 2004.

Wenner separated from his wife, Jane Wenner, on the occasion of his coming-out in 1995 . However, Jane Wenner still holds the position of Vice President of Wenner Media to this day. The two have three sons together. Since 1995 Jann Wenner has had a partner , Matt Nye , a fashion designer, with whom he is raising three other children.
