Boz Scaggs
Boz Scaggs (born June 8, 1944 in Canton , Ohio , USA , as William Royce Scaggs) is an American musician and Grammy winner who has made a very good name for himself as a band leader, guitarist and singer in rock , R & B , blues and more recently also as a jazz - Crooner has made.
biography
Boz Scaggs grew up in Oklahoma and Texas and was a school friend of guitarist Steve Miller , with whom he was singing music in a band called The Marksmen in Dallas in the late 1950s . Later they both attended the University of Wisconsin and played together in various blues / rock bands. In 1963 Scaggs returned to Dallas, where he joined an R&B band called The Wigs , with whom he went to Europe in 1964. When this group disbanded in England, Scaggs stayed in Europe for two more years and tried his hand at street music here. He recorded his first solo album in Sweden in 1965 under the title Boz . After Scaggs returned to the United States in 1967, he settled in San Francisco , where he met his childhood friend Steve Miller again. As a member of the Steve Miller Band , he was involved in the production of two of their early albums ( Children of the Future and Sailor ). In 1968 Scaggs finally decided to work on his solo career in the future.
At the end of the 1960s, Boz Scaggs signed a contract with the renowned label Atlantic Records , released his supposed debut album Boz Scaggs in 1969 with the help of Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals Band , but then it was only a favorite of the critics and did not find a wide audience for his music, which was strongly influenced by the blues. Even after switching to Columbia Records in the early 1970s and the album Moments produced by Glyn Johns , commercial success was still denied. Although the reviews of his albums were mostly full of praise, they did not succeed in the sales lists. It was not until the 1976 record Silk Degrees that the hoped-for breakthrough was finally achieved. For several weeks it established itself in second place on the US album hit parade and has sold four million copies in the US to date. With singles like Lowdown , Lido Shuffle and What Can I Say Boz Scaggs was also able to place himself in the British charts. The band on Silk Degrees included the later Toto musicians, drummer Jeff Porcaro , bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich , who co-wrote most of the songs. The follow-up album Down Two Then Left also went platinum with one million records sold, but had no single hits. It wasn't until Middle Man that Boz Scaggs reached the top ten of the US Billboard Charts # 8 again in 1980. The singles Breakdown Dead Ahead and Jojo made the top 20 of the US Hot 100. The album produced by David Foster also went platinum again and, thanks to Toto guitarist Steve Lukather, was much more rocking than its predecessor. With the single ballad Look What You've Done To Me from the Urban Cowboy soundtrack , Scaggs had a third top 20 hit in the same year. The musicians of this track were the Toto members Steve Porcaro , Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather as well as the Eagles musicians Don Felder , Glenn Frey , Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit .
After a greatest hits album Hits 1981 with the hit single Miss Sun , Boz Scaggs largely retired from the music business for a few years and took care of his own nightclub Slim’s in San Francisco. His " comeback album" Other Roads was not released until 1988 , and a mature Scaggs started the second part of his career as a musician, which is far less influenced by rock 'n' roll than the first part. After his collaboration with Donald Fagen and his New York Rock and Soul Revue in 1992 and CDs such as Some Change , Come On Home and Dig , Boz Scaggs is now regarded as a serene and very experienced professional musician. With the album But Beautiful is Scaggs tried last even as a crooner on interpretations of jazz standards from the Great American Songbook .
