David Paich (born June 25, 1954 in Los Angeles , California) is an American keyboardist , singer and songwriter . He is a founding member of the US rock band Toto .

Life

David Paich grew up in Los Angeles as the son of the well-known composer and arranger Marty Paich . Animated by his father, he learned to play the piano at an early age. During his school days he formed his first band with friends, including the later Toto founding members Steve Lukather , Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro . Paich also worked as a session musician in Los Angeles, where he is still a popular guest on many albums through his collaboration with Boz Scaggs , Don Henley , Bryan Adams , Diana Ross , Joe Cocker , Rod Stewart , Michael Jackson , David Garfield and Pink is.

In 1976 he founded the band Toto together with the Porcaro brothers, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball and David Hungate . David Paich is the composer of many of Toto’s songs, such as B. Africa , together with Jeff Porcaro, Stranger In Town or Rosanna , for whom the band won a Grammy Award in 1982 . In 1984 David Paich wrote and produced the Toto soundtrack for the remake of David Lynch's film Dune . In the past few years he has also worked on several projects again. So he played u. a. together with his bandmates Steve Lukather, Steve and Mike Porcaro , Bobby Kimball and the former Toto singers Fergie Frederiksen and Joseph Williams on Radioactive , a hard rock project by the Swedish guitarist Tommy Denander . In 2006 a new Toto album was released, Falling In Between , in which Paich was again significantly involved.

Rumors about Paich's planned gender reassignment are false and arose from a joking message from his Toto colleagues who refused to reveal the real reason for Paich's absence in the summer of 2003, a case of illness in his family circle. It is now known that it is his seriously ill sister. Because of her, Paich decided not to participate in Toto concerts outside the USA for an indefinite period of time, but was still a permanent member of the group. With Greg Phillinganes , who has played sporadically with Toto since 2003 and occasionally replaced him, the band had a second permanent keyboardist since 2005, who was now able to relieve David Paich.

In 2008, at the invitation of the organizers, Paich worked with other artists on musical arrangements for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

David Paich's musical equipment includes A. the following keyboards: Yamaha KX-88 , Hammond XB-2 , Yamaha Motif 8 , Yamaha SY-77 , Korg Triton , Yamaha SY-99 , Yamaha DX-7 , Yamaha Motif XF , Kurzweil PC3X . In 2018 the Yamaha Motif XF was replaced by the successor model Yamaha Montage.
