Joseph Stanley Williams (born September 1, 1960 in Santa Monica , California ) is an American rock singer and film composer . He became known as the lead singer of the rock band Toto .

He grew up in Encino. He is the son of singer and actress Barbara Ruick and Hollywood composer John Williams, and the grandson of jazz drummer Johnny Williams and actors Lurene Tuttle and Melville Ruick . He has an older sister and an older brother who is also a musician.

Career

Toto

As the lead singer of Toto, Joseph Williams first released the albums Fahrenheit (1986) and The Seventh One (1988). After the tour in 1988 he had to leave Toto because his voice couldn't withstand the stress of the many concerts. In 1998 he temporarily returned to the band for a short promotional tour through Europe for the Toto album Toto XX . During the year he also wrote the song Mad About You for the album Mindfields with David Paich . In 2005 Williams worked on Toto's 2006 album Falling In Between . He sang the chorus of Bottom of Your Soul .

Since Toto's short tour of Europe in July 2010, Williams has been the band's lead singer again. In 2015 the album XIV appeared with him as lead singer.

Solo career

In 1982 he released his first solo album Joseph Williams . On it, among others, Steve Lukather to hear guitarist of Toto. After his time at Toto Williams released other solo albums, on which members of Toto also worked. I Am Alive was released in Japan in 1996 and in Europe a year later. In 1997 his third solo album 3 was released. In 1999 he released the album Early Years with some demo versions from earlier years. In 2008 the solo album This Fall was released .

For the Vertigo project , which he helped initiate, he contributed the vocals without being involved in the entire production, which is why the two albums were not released under his name.

Work as a film composer

In collaboration with his father, he worked on the soundtracks for the films AI Artificial Intelligence , Return Of The Jedi and The Fury . He wrote the soundtrack for the film Im Fadhreuz des Todes and the CBS miniseries Category 7 - The End of the World .

He wrote music for television series such as Roswell , The Lyon's Den and Miracles . For the latter, he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music . In 2002 he wrote the music for the short film Another Life .

Work with other artists

Williams always works with other artists. He sang three songs for Jay Graydon's album Airplay for the Planet and went on tour with him. In the film The Lion King he can be heard as the singing voice of the adult Simba. With Bobby Kimball , Jason Scheff and Bill Champlin (or Tommy Funderburk ) he recorded two a cappella albums under the name West Coast All Stars . He worked with the Swedish guitarist Tommy Denander on his Radioactive project . He was involved as a background singer on the first album Ceremony of Innocence . On Peter Friestedt's albums LA Project and LA Project II he contributed the vocals to one or two songs. Steve Lukather hired him as a backing singer for his solo album Ever Changing Times .
