David Garfield (born September 27, 1956 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American keyboardist, songwriter and producer.

Career

David Garfield began playing the piano at the age of seven. From 1964 to 1970 he lived with his family in New York City , where he was strongly influenced by rock music. He found his love for jazz in the four years that followed, which he lived in St. Louis .

After working mainly with jazz musicians on albums and tours in the 1970s, he made a name for himself as a songwriter and producer in Japan in the following decade . Only after founding his own production company Creatchy Productions did he release his own albums. The work on his first album Tribute To Jeff , dedicated to the drummer Jeff Porcaro , who died in 1992 , lasted almost six years. The reason for this was that Garfield collaborated on this album with over 70 West Coast musicians who had previously played with Porcaro. Don Henley , Van Halen , Michael McDonald and Richard Marx could be heard on this album . In 1998 he released his first solo album I Am The Cat Man , which he has had five more to follow.

Garfield is also the founder or co-founder of many bands and projects in which he plays with colleagues. In 1975 he founded the band Karizma with his friend Carlos Vega, to which Michael Landau and Lenny Castro later also belonged. With Los Lobotomys , a project he founded in 1985 with Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather , he later went on tour with Aerosmith and Peter Gabriel . He also founded the Los Angeles Keyboard Project in 1990 , to which he invited many well-known keyboard players from the region, including Steve Porcaro , David Paich (both Toto ) and David Witham ( George Benson ), to record albums together.

During his career so far, Garfield has also worked with many well-known artists on the music scene. He has worked on albums by George Benson, Eros Ramazzotti , Spinal Tap , Boz Scaggs and Larry Carlton as a keyboardist, songwriter and producer. He is also a valued guest on tours. He accompanied Michael McDonald, Luther Vandross , Nancy Wilson , Toto and many other artists at their concerts. He also gives his own concerts and organizes the "Carlos Vega Memorial Birthday" concert, which takes place annually in memory of his deceased friend in Los Angeles.

Garfield has composed several film scores so far, for example for the films Annie and Always. He wrote several advertising jingles for Coca-Cola and McDonald’s .

In addition to his musical works, Garfield also published two DVDs and a book on playing keyboards in rock and pop music.
