Nancy Wilson (singer)
Nancy Wilson (* 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe , Ohio ; † 13. December 2018 in Pioneertown , California ) was an American jazz - singer and multiple Grammy -Preisträgerin. She also recorded several works in the fields of pop , R&B , soul and disco . In total, she placed 34 albums in the American album charts. In 1964, Time magazine called her the “ likely heiress of Ella Fitzgerald ” and described her work as “a treatise on variety and taste, spun by a voice of agile grace, with knowledge of jazz inflection and phrasing”. She was known as a "song stylist".
Life
Nancy Wilson began her career in the 1950s as a singer in jazz clubs in the Columbus, Ohio area . She recorded her first records at the end of the decade. She also signed a contract with the renowned record company Capitol Records and released her debut Like in Love here in 1960 . Wilson remained under contract with Capitol until 1980. In the 1960s she became one of the most popular jazz singers and even got her own TV show, where she sang pop songs beyond the boundaries of jazz, which only made her popularity even greater. In 1964 she was awarded a Grammy for best vocal performance in rhythm and blues for her interpretation of (You Don't Know) How Glad I Am . She has performed in concerts with Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughan . She received an Emmy Award for her Nancy Wilson Show and was also a frequent guest on other shows. She also performed regularly in Las Vegas .
From the mid-1970s she recorded several disco- style records , including the smaller hits on the R&B charts, I'm Gonna Let Ya (1978) and Life, Love And Harmony (1979). The last LP for Capitol, Take My Love (1980), contains disco pieces.
When the popularity of personality shows declined, she returned to jazz in the 1980s and worked with musicians such as Hank Jones , Art Farmer and Henry Johnson . She made three albums with Ramsey Lewis : The Two of Us (1984), Simple Pleasures (2002) and Meant to Be (2003). For her last studio album during her lifetime, Turned to Blue (2006), she received the Grammy for the best vocal album in jazz in 2007, as in 2005 for RSVP (Rare Songs, Very Personal) .
In 2004 she received the Jazz Masters Fellowship from the state NEA Foundation .
Wilson hosted the NPR show Jazz Profiles from 1996 to 2005 . In the series, legends of jazz and their music were presented in interviews, comments and reports. Nancy Wilson and the program received the George Foster Peabody Award for production in 2001. As of 2011, she stopped performing.
Nancy Wilson died in December 2018 after a long illness at home in Pioneertown, California, a desert community near Joshua Tree National Park .
