English greeting

The angelic salutation is since the Middle Ages, the name given to the greetings of the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation that Maria the Son of God would give birth. The designation of the greeting as "English" is derived from the word angel ; the expression has nothing to do with the English language .

The angel's greeting is in the New Testament in the Gospel according to Luke :

"Greetings, you favored one, the Lord is with you."

The English greeting can be found in the opening sentence of the Ave Maria prayer . Supplemented by the name of Mary, which is not mentioned at that point in the New Testament, the first sentence of the prayer reads: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you."
