Slim Shady EP ( Slim Shady refers to Eminem's Alter Ego ) is an EP by the American rapper Eminem . It was released on December 10, 1997 via the Detroit independent label Web Entertainment and is the first release on which Eminem raps under his alter ego Slim Shady , which he got before.
background
In contrast to Infinite , the release of the EP gave Eminem considerably more attention from an audience that went beyond hip-hop . It even earned him an article in the "Unsigned Hype" campaign for rap magazine The Source in March 1998 . In addition, the wearing Slim Shady EP significantly to Eminem's later success in as the president of Interscope Records , Jimmy Iovine , the EP already the famous rapper and producer Dr. Dre gave and this then wanted to work with Eminem. Eminem got a contract and Dr. Dre recorded the The Slim Shady LP with him, which included three tracks from the Slim Shady EP ( If I Had , Just Don't Give a Fuck , Just the Two of Us ) in slightly modified versions or among other titles .

After the rather poor success of his debut album Infinite and the criticism that it would sound too much like Nas , Eminem decided on this EP under his alter ego Slim Shady to rap on more controversial topics such as drugs, sex and violence. These are the beginnings of the rap style that made it famous two years later.
Production and samples
The Bass Brothers acted as with Eminem's debut album as executive producers , but contributed only the beat on both versions of If I Had ... at. In contrast, DJ Head is responsible for three productions ( Low Down, Dirty , Just the Two of Us , No One's Iller ). Eminem's friend and D12 member Denaun Porter produced both versions of Just Don't Give a Fuck and the Skit Mommy . DJ Rec also produced the beat for Murder, Murder . Eminem himself worked on the intro .
The EP contains many samples of songs by other artists. So contains Low Down, Dirty elements of songs Soopaman Luva 3 of Redman and One More Chance (Remix) by Notorious BIG Just Do not Give a Fuck is sampling the song I Do not Give a Fuck by 2Pac . With Just the Two of Us is the eponymous song by Grover Washington, Jr. heard. The track No One's Iller contains elements of Wildflower by Hank Crawford and Murder, Murder contains samples of the songs 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon , Outlaw by 2Pac, and SlaughtaHouse by Masta Ace .

The cover should represent a mirror image. A figure dressed in red with an attached hood can be seen hitting the mirror, whereupon it begins to splinter. In the upper part there are the lettering Eminem and Slim Shady EP . The background is black. The illustration refers to the content of the intro, in which Eminem is awakened by an inner voice ( Slim Shady ) and asked to look in the mirror, but he is reluctant and ultimately smashes the mirror.

Four other artists appear on the EP. The singer Kristie Abete can be heard in both versions of the song If I Had ... The two D12 members Swift and Bizarre as well as the underground rapper Fuzz Scooter have guest contributions on the track No One's Iller .
