Best Friend ( English for " Best Friend ") is a song by the US rapper Yelawolf , which he recorded with the rapper Eminem . The song is the fifth single from his third studio album Love Story and was released on April 14, 2015.

In the song, Yelawolf raps about his relationship with God , whom he describes as "best friend". In the first stanza he says that he doesn't really have much to do with the church , but that he believes in the last days and that his life is a path on which he partly goes through hell and at the end of which the Last Judgment awaits . In the chorus he addresses the Trinity directly and sees God as his best friend. The second stanza deals with the fact that Yelawolf did not know much about the Bible , but grew up in the Bible Belt . He also respects people for their beliefs and wishes his enemies only the best . The third verse of Eminem is much longer and rapping faster than the first two verses. Among other things, he deals with the relationship with his best friend Proof , who was shot in 2006. He also asks God's forgiveness for the numerous arguments he has been involved in during his career. However, he cannot guarantee that he will hold back in the future either, and he hopes for divine assistance.

Best Friend was produced by music producer WillPower in collaboration with Eminem , who acted as co-producer. They did not use samples of other songs.

Music video

The music video for Best Friend was directed by Spidey Smith and premiered on April 24, 2015. At first, Yelawolf raps in a grain field, wearing a black hat with a white cross on it. In between there are shots of a wolf roaming the field. Sometimes you can see Yelawolf in a red-lit room. Finally the place changes and he raps in a church and in the dark in a cemetery, with the wolf also present. Eminem then raps his part completely inside the church. In the end, both Yelawolf and the wolf leave the church again.

With over 130 million views, it is the most watched video by Yelawolf on YouTube (as of April 2019).

The single cover is kept very simple and shows the gray lettering Yelawolf ft. Eminem and best friend in Gothic lettering on a black background.

Chart successes and awards

Best Friend only reached the Canadian charts ( Canadian Hot 100 ) at number 51 and the Belgian charts ( Flanders Ultratip ) at number 78. In Germany, however, it missed the top 100.

Although Best Friend didn't hit the US charts, it went platinum in 2019 for more than one million copies sold in the United States .

David Maurer wrote in the review of the accompanying album Love Story on laut.de about the song: “While Yelawolf finds God with Justin Timberlake vibe in believing, but by no means intrusive religious parts, Eminem even illuminates the saints with his more than ninety-second continuous fire in heaven."
